WEEK 2 — SEEKING GOD FIRST TOGETHER

BIG IDEA: When God is , everything else finds its .

Marriage has God designed .

But good things in the wrong can create an unhealthy .

You don’t strengthen a marriage simply by . You strengthen it by it correctly.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6:33 NLT

1. GOD FIRST DOESN’T MEAN GOD ONLY

Sometimes Christians hear “put God first” and imagine a ranked list:

  1. God
  2. Spouse
  3. Kids
  4. Work
  5. Everything else

There is truth there, but biblical priority is deeper than a checklist.

God isn’t simply on my list. He is the of my life.

He affects how I:

  • my spouse.
  • my children.
  • Handle .
  • Use my .
  • Navigate .
  • Make .

“You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 NLT

KEY TRUTH: God doesn’t want to be of your marriage. He wants to be of your marriage.

2. WHEN GOD ISN’T FIRST, YOUR SPOUSE FEELS THE PRESSURE

Last week: Your spouse is your , not your .

When God isn’t occupying His rightful place, we start asking another person to give us things they were never capable of providing.

“You need to make me happy.”

“You need to make me feel secure.”

“You need to validate me.”

“You need to fulfill me.”

And suddenly your spouse isn’t just being asked to love you—they’re being asked to complete you.

That’s crushing pressure.

KEY TRUTH: The more I expect from what only God can provide, the freer I am to my spouse for who they are.

3. FOLLOWING JESUS TOGETHER LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR EVERY COUPLE

“Many couples love God deeply as individuals but feel disconnected .”

Different doesn’t mean .

“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better…”

Ecclesiastes 4:12

KEY TRUTH: Spiritual unity doesn’t require spiritual .

4. SPIRITUAL INTIMACY IS BUILT IN SMALL MOMENTS

together.
It can be 60 seconds before you go to sleep.

about what God is teaching you.
“What stood out to you Sunday?”

decisions with God in mind.
“Have we prayed about this?”

together.
Church shouldn’t be the only spiritual experience you share, but it’s an important one.

God together.

KEY TRUTH: Consistency matters more than .

5. YOU CAN INVITE YOUR SPOUSE, BUT YOU CAN’T BE THEIR HOLY SPIRIT

“You are not the Holy Spirit for your spouse—your job is to invite, not enforce.”

You cannot another person’s spiritual formation.

KEY TRUTH: produces connection. produces resistance.

.

Ask: “What is ONE spiritual rhythm we could begin doing together?”

Just take one step toward Jesus .

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else…”

FINAL TRUTH: When God is , everything else finds its .
