Username and Password: Lead us not into temptation.

It’s happened to all of us. We are trying to get into a webpage and put in our username and our password and the website will not recognize it. They keep giving you the same response; username or password are incorrect. For some of us here today, this is exactly what prayer feels like and that’s why.

This series helps us to return to the simplicity of prayer using the Lord’s prayer as a template.

Matthew 6:9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10 Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

    on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread,

12 and forgive us our debts,

    as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

    but deliver us from evil.

When you really look at the Lord’s prayer as a template for praying, we should immediately recognize that praying is not about coming to get God to get Him to do something, but first of all it’s coming because God wants to give us something.

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

We come to the part of the Lord’s prayer where we have to get real about our weaknesses and our vulnerabilities. And we are going to pray and plan for the inevitable temptations, and tests and confrontations with evil that are coming our way.

James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

John 17:5 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

There is a lot going on in these verses.

When we say “lead us not into temptation” is not God himself who is coming with temptation to trap you, addict you, and defeat you.

Temptation works when there is opportunity and desire. Sometimes there is no opportunity but a desire and so there’s no temptation. Other times there is a desire but no opportunity. But when there is an opportunity, and a desire temptation is present.

Temptation is definitely a meeting with the evil one.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

A history lesson. The first temptation is the same as every other temptation.

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

The anatomy of temptation.

It starts with Satan acting as a theologian, as your therapist. “Did God really say?”

And then Satan overemphasizes and overstates the one prohibition. The prohibition is “you shall not eat of that tree.” And suddenly, what was forbidden was the only thing that seemed to be able to satisfy her.

And then Satan casts doubt upon God’s motives. “He just knows that your eyes are going to be opened and you will be like God.” He convinces Eve that God is limiting her.

And then finally Satan pulls the last punch, he flatly denies what God said would happen; “you will not die.” Satan convinces them that God does not mean what he says.

This happens billions of times every day. It can happen in an instant, or it can happen over a long period of time.

And so, we are told… Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

If I were the devil I would be coming after you.

I would come to you with an appropriate temptation. All temptation is about robbing three things in your life – your faith, your future, and your family.

If I were the devil, I would shove the five D’s on you…

1. I would deceive youand make you question everything that God is clearly communicated.
2. And then I would distract you.
3. And then I would discourage you.
4. And then I would devalue God.
5. If I were the devil, I would disqualify you.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. The truth is any temptation that you face is common.

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability…

…but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

In every temptation and in every test, God provides a door.

Maybe you feel like the person on the commercial who says, “I have fallen, and I can’t get up.” Part of God’s delivering power is to deliver you from any sin that has taken hold of your life. There is forgiveness. There is new power. There is new life waiting for you today. There is a way back. There is a fresh infilling of the spirit to be had.

Maybe we can pray a prayer like this today…

“Father, thank you for all the times you’ve kept me from temptation. Help me to avoid temptation. When I am in trials and I’m tempted to be unfaithful to you, come to my aid and give me what I need. Keep me from the evil one. And when I meet him, come with your deliverance.

However, I know that there will be times when temptation will be present and trials. I know in my own flesh that I am weak, and I cannot face these tests on my own. So, I lean upon you today.

I lean upon the fact that there is no weapon that is formed against me that can prosper.

I lean upon the fact that I can be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might not have to fight this battle in my own power.

I lean upon the fact that you have given me authority over all the power of the enemy.

I lean upon the fact that I am in the palm of your hand, and nothing can snatch me out of it.

I lean upon the fact that greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world and everything the world can offer me.

I lean upon the fact that you are for me that if you are for me then who can be against me.

I lean upon the fact that even when I fail, if I confess my sins, you are faithful to forgive and bring me back into your arms and into your kingdom.

I lean upon the fact that Satan has more to fear from me that I had to fear from him.

I lean upon the fact that you will never abandon me, or fail me, or forsake me.

Lord, I open my heart, my mind, my body, and my soul to you that you will guide my steps, accomplish your will, empower me by your spirit, protect my heart, fortify my mind, crucify my flesh and successfully wage war against all things at wage war against me.

In Jesus name. Amen.

A todos nos ha pasado. Estamos tratando de ingresar a una página web e ingresar nuestro nombre de usuario y nuestra contraseña y el sitio web no lo reconocerá. Siguen dándote la misma respuesta; El nombre de usuario o la contraseña son incorrectos. Para algunos de nosotros aquí hoy, esto es exactamente lo que se siente en la oración y es por eso.

Esta serie nos ayuda a volver a la sencillez de la oración usando el Padre Nuestro como modelo.

Mateo 6:9 Orad, pues, de esta manera:

“Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.10 Venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo.11 Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día,12 y perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros hemos perdonado a nuestros deudores.13 Y no nos dejes caer en tentación, sino líbranos del mal.

Cuando realmente miras el Padre Nuestro como un modelo para orar, debemos reconocer inmediatamente que orar no se trata de venir a buscar a Dios para que Él haga algo, sino que en primer lugar viene porque Dios quiere darnos algo.

Mateo 6:13 Y no nos dejes caer en tentación, sino líbranos del mal.

Llegamos a la parte del Padre Nuestro en la que tenemos que ser realistas acerca de nuestras debilidades y vulnerabilidades. Y vamos a orar y planear para las inevitables tentaciones, pruebas y confrontaciones con el mal que se nos presentan.

Santiago 1:13 Nadie diga cuando es tentado: “Soy tentado por Dios”, porque Dios no puede ser tentado con el mal, y él mismo no tienta a nadie. 14 Pero cada uno es tentado cuando es atraído y seducido por su propio deseo. 15 Entonces la concupiscencia, una vez concebida, da a luz el pecado, y el pecado, cuando ha llegado a su madurez, da a luz la muerte.

Juan 17:5 No os pido que los quitéis del mundo, sino que los guardéis del maligno.

Hay muchas cosas que suceden en estos versículos.

Cuando decimos “no nos dejes caer en tentación” no es Dios mismo quien viene con la tentación para atraparte, hacerte adicto y derrotarte.

La tentación funciona cuando hay oportunidad y deseo. A veces no hay oportunidad sino un deseo, y por lo tanto no hay tentación. Otras veces hay un deseo, pero no una oportunidad. Pero cuando hay una oportunidad, y un deseo, la tentación está presente.

La tentación es, definitivamente, un encuentro con el maligno.

Efesios 6:13 Tomad, pues, toda la armadura de Dios, para que podáis resistir en el día malo, y habiéndolo hecho todo, estar firmes.

Una lección de historia. La primera tentación es la misma que cualquier otra tentación.

Génesis 3:1 Y la serpiente era más astuta que todas las bestias del campo que el Señor Dios había hecho.

 Le dijo a la mujer: «¿Dijo Dios realmente: ‘No comerás de ningún árbol del jardín’?” 2 Y la mujer dijo a la serpiente: Podemos comer del fruto de los árboles del huerto, 3 pero Dios dijo: No comerás del fruto del árbol que está en medio del huerto, ni lo tocarás, para que no mueras.

 4 Pero la serpiente dijo a la mujer: “No morirás. 5 Porque Dios sabe que cuando comáis de él, se os abrirán los ojos, y seréis como Dios, conociendo el bien y el mal. 6 Cuando la mujer vio que el árbol era bueno para comer, y que era un deleite para los ojos, y que el árbol era deseable para hacer sabio, tomó de su fruto y comió, y también dio un poco a su marido que estaba con ella, y él comió. 7 Entonces se les abrieron los ojos a ambos, y se dieron cuenta de que estaban desnudos.

La anatomía de la tentación.

Comienza con Satanás actuando como teólogo, como su terapeuta. “¿Realmente dijo Dios?”

Y luego Satanás exagera y exagera la única prohibición. La prohibición es “no comerás de ese árbol”. Y de repente, lo que estaba prohibido era lo único que parecía poder satisfacerla.

Y entonces Satanás pone en duda los motivos de Dios. “Él solo sabe que tus ojos se abrirán y serás como Dios”. Convence a Eva de que Dios la está limitando.

Y luego, finalmente, Satanás da el último golpe, niega rotundamente lo que Dios dijo que sucedería; “No morirás”. Satanás los convence de que Dios no quiere decir lo que dice.

Esto sucede miles de millones de veces al día. Puede suceder en un instante o puede suceder durante un largo período de tiempo.

Y así, nos dicen… Mateo 6:13 Y no nos dejes caer en tentación, sino líbranos del mal.

Si yo fuera el diablo, iría tras ti.

Quisiera venir a ti con una tentación apropiada. Toda tentación tiene que ver con robar tres cosas en tu vida: tu fe, tu futuro y tu familia.

Si yo fuera el diablo, te pondría las cinco D…

1. Te engañaría y te haría cuestionar todo lo que Dios está claramente comunicado.
2. Y luego te distraería.
3. Y entonces te desanimaría.
4. Y entonces devaluaría a Dios.
5. Si yo fuera el diablo, te descalificaría.

1 Corintios 10:13 No os ha sobrevenido ninguna tentación que no sea humana. Dios es fiel, y no permitirá que seas tentado más allá de tu capacidad, sino que con la tentación también te dará la vía de escape, para que puedas soportarla.

 

Ninguna tentación te ha sobrevenido que no sea común al hombre. La verdad es que cualquier tentación a la que te enfrentas es común.

 

Dios es fiel y no permitirá que seas tentado más allá de tu capacidad…

 

… pero con la tentación también proveerá la salida, para que podáis soportarla.

 

En cada tentación y en cada prueba, Dios provee una puerta.

Tal vez te sientas como la persona en el comercial que dice: “Me he caído y no puedo levantarme”. Parte del poder liberador de Dios es liberarte de cualquier pecado que se haya apoderado de tu vida. Hay perdón. Hay un nuevo poder. Hay una nueva vida esperándote hoy. Hay un camino de regreso. Hay una nueva llenura del espíritu que se puede tener.

Tal vez podamos rezar una oración como esta hoy…

“Padre, gracias por todas las veces que me has mantenido alejado de la tentación. Ayúdame a evitar la tentación. Cuando esté en pruebas y tenga la tentación de serte infiel, ven en mi ayuda y dame lo que necesito. Guárdame del maligno. Y cuando me encuentre con él, ven con tu liberación.

Sin embargo, sé que habrá momentos en los que la tentación estará presente y las pruebas. Sé en carne propia que soy débil y no puedo enfrentar estas pruebas por mi cuenta. Por lo tanto, hoy me apoyo en ustedes.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que no hay arma que se forme contra mí que pueda prosperar.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que puedo ser fuerte en el Señor y en la fuerza de Él podría no tener que pelear esta batalla en mi propio poder.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que me has dado autoridad sobre todo el poder del enemigo.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que estoy en la palma de tu mano, y nada puede arrebatarme de ella.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que más grande es el que está en mí que el que está en el mundo y todo lo que el mundo puede ofrecerme.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que tú estás a favor de mí, que, si tú estás a favor de mí, entonces ¿quién puede estar en mi contra?

Me apoyo en el hecho de que incluso cuando fallo, si confieso mis pecados, eres fiel para perdonarme y traerme de vuelta a tus brazos y a tu reino.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que Satanás tiene más que temer de mí que yo tenía que temer de él.

Me apoyo en el hecho de que nunca me abandonarás, ni me fallarás, ni me abandonarás.

Señor, abro mi corazón, mi mente, mi cuerpo y mi alma a ti para que guíes mis pasos, cumplas tu voluntad, me des poder por tu espíritu, protejas mi corazón, fortalezcas mi mente, crucifiques mi carne y hagas la guerra con éxito contra todas las cosas en mi contra.

 

En el nombre de Jesús. Amén.
