Username and Password: Give Us This Day

This series helps us to return to the simplicity of prayer using the Lord’s prayer is a template. Prayer was vital in the life of Jesus and it vital to the life of Riverside and you!. It is the war room of our faith.

Prayer is the sacred act of humbly connecting with father God’s great abundance in the throne room of grace. Prayer is a space that we inhabit.

Matthew 6:9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10 Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

    on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread,

12 and forgive us our debts,

    as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

    but deliver us from evil.

The first thing about this prayer is relationship with not just with a God and King, but our father.

We belong in this sacred place of prayer.

Hallowed be thy name.

The kingdom come, your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.

Every time you ask for something from up there to come down here you are starting a fight against the kingdom of darkness.

This is the most violent part of praying when we plead with God to rule over things on this earth that are out of control.

This is not a nice part of prayer. This is not you saying, “Lord just come and leave a blessing. Change their life but not too much.” We are asking for an overthrowing of everything that is not the way God wants it to be.

Let’s move to the third part of the prayer where we finally get to ask something for ourselves;

Matthew 6:11  Give us this day our daily bread…

What does it mean to ask for our daily bread?

Let’s first go back to the Old testament and God’s provision of manna.

Ex 16:4 (NIV)

     4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

Ex 16:15-18 (NIV)

     Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.'”

     17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he needed.

They are to gather enough for the day.

They are to take as much as they need.

There was always enough.

And I didn’t read this part, but they couldn’t keep any until the next day.

Matthew 6:11  Give us this day our daily bread… It’s the picture of what God desires in your life.

Bread is a huge symbol in the Bible.

One of the dramatic scenes of the New Testament Satan is tempting Jesus. Jesus has been fasting and is hungry. Satan hands him a rock tells him to turn it into bread. Jesus answers;

Matthew 4:3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

The big point is that there is a bread on earth that sustains the human body, but also there is a bread that comes from the mouth of God that sustains the human soul.

Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies…

Esta serie nos ayuda a volver a la simplicidad de la oración usando el Padre Nuestro como modelo. La oración fue vital en la vida de Jesús y es vital para la vida de Riverside y para ti. Es la sala de guerra de nuestra fe.

La oración es el acto sagrado de conectarse humildemente con la gran abundancia de Dios Padre en la sala del trono de la gracia. La oración es un espacio que habitamos.

Mateo 6:9 Orad, pues, de esta manera:

“Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.10 Venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo.11 Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día,12 y perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros hemos perdonado a nuestros deudores.13 Y no nos dejes caer en tentación, sino líbranos del mal.

Lo primero acerca de esta oración es la relación no solo con un Dios y Rey, sino con nuestro padre.

Pertenecemos a este lugar sagrado de oración.

Santificado sea tu nombre.

Venga el reino, hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo.

Cada vez que pides algo de allá arriba para venir aquí, estás comenzando una lucha contra el reino de las tinieblas.

Esta es la parte más violenta de la oración cuando le suplicamos a Dios que gobierne sobre las cosas en esta tierra que están fuera de control.

Esta no es una parte agradable de la oración. No se trata de decir: “Señor, ven y deja una bendición. Cambiar su vida, pero no demasiado”. Estamos pidiendo un derrocamiento de todo lo que no es como Dios quiere que sea.

Pasemos a la tercera parte de la oración donde finalmente podemos pedir algo para nosotros mismos;

Mateo 6:11 El pan nuestro de cada día, dánoslo hoy…

¿Qué significa pedir el pan nuestro de cada día?

Primero regresemos al Antiguo Testamento y a la provisión de maná por parte de Dios.

Éxodo 16:4 (NVI)

 4 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Haré llover pan del cielo para ti. La gente debe salir todos los días y reunir lo suficiente para ese día. De esta manera los probaré y veré si siguen mis instrucciones.

Éxodo 16:15-18 (NVI)

 Moisés les dijo: “Es el pan que el Señor les ha dado para comer. 16 Así lo ha mandado el Señor: “Cada uno recoja lo que necesite. Toma un omer por cada persona que tengas en tu tienda'”.

 17 Los israelitas hicieron lo que se les dijo: unos recogieron mucho, otros poco. 18 Y cuando lo midieron por el omer, el que recogió mucho, no tuvo demasiado, y el que recogió poco, no tuvo poco. Cada uno juntó todo lo que necesitaba.

Deben reunir lo suficiente para el día.

Deben tomar todo lo que necesiten.

Siempre había suficiente.

Y no leí esta parte, pero no pudieron guardar nada hasta el día siguiente.

Mateo 6:11 El pan nuestro de cada día, dánoslo hoy… Es la imagen de lo que Dios desea en tu vida.

El pan es un gran símbolo en la Biblia.

Una de las escenas dramáticas del Nuevo Testamento es Satanás tentando a Jesús. Jesús ha estado ayunando y tiene hambre. Satanás le entrega una piedra y le dice que la convierta en pan. Jesús responde;

Mateo 4:3 Y acercándose el tentador, le dijo: Si tú eres Hijo de Dios, manda que estas piedras se conviertan en panes. 4 Pero él respondió: «Escrito está:

“No solo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios.”

El punto importante es que hay un pan en la tierra que sostiene el cuerpo humano, pero también hay un pan que sale de la boca de Dios que sostiene el alma humana.

Salmo 23:5 Preparas mesa delante de mí en presencia de mis enemigos…

¡Veamos lo que DIOS puede hacer!
