Username and Password: Our Father

 

It’s happened to all of us. We are trying to get into a webpage and we are entering our username and our password and the website will not recognize it. They keep giving you the same response; username or password are incorrect.

 

For some of us here today, this is exactly what prayer feels like. We can’t get in to the sacred place where prayer is heard and answered because our username or password is incorrect.

 

During this series we’re going to look at the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6 and try to come back to the simplicity and purpose of prayer.

 

Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

 

Jesus has heard a lot of praying since creation and he immediately identifies a couple of problems.

 

First, the hypocrites.

Secondly, repetitious prayers.

 

The instructions of Jesus is to make some time, find a place, and go meet with your father. The Bible has lots to say about what goes on in that place. It has a lot to say about how we enter into that place.

 

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

 

Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh…

 

Psalm 24:3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

    And who shall stand in his holy place?

4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

    who does not lift up his soul to what is false

    and does not swear deceitfully.

5 He will receive blessing from the Lord

    and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,

    who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

 

But if you look back at the Scripture you will begin to understand that prayer is not a transaction that we make with God, it is actually a space that we inhabit.

 

Prayer is the sacred act of humbly connecting with father God’s great abundance in the throne room of grace.

 

Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

 

The Lord’s prayer starts out with the word “father.” In fact, four times Jesus mentions the father.

• Pray to your father in secret.
• Your father sees you and hears you will respond.
• Your father knows what you need.
• Your Father is in heaven.

 

Don’t ever limit your understanding of the fatherhood of God to the experience of your own father — no matter how good he was or how bad he was. Rather, take heart that God has none of the sins of your father — none.

God has none of the limitations of your father.

God has none of the weaknesses of your father,

and he has none of the hang-ups of your father — none of them.

Your heavenly father will never lie to you.

Your heavenly father doesn’t show up late.

Your heavenly father doesn’t make promises he can keep.

Your heavenly father is merciful and forgiving.

Your heavenly father is not scary.

 

When we approach prayer we are approaching the heavenly father.

 

Psalm 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

 

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.

 

1 John 3:1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

 

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

 

2 Corinthians 6:18 And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”

 

Galatians 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

 

When we show up in prayer our first acknowledgment is not what we want from him, but it is to show up in relationship.

 

Our father in heaven, hallowed, or sacred, is your name.

 

This is actually the first request in the Lord’s prayer.  It is a request for the name of God to be lifted up as sacred.

 

1 John 5:10 Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.

A todos nos ha pasado. Estamos tratando de ingresar a una página web e ingresamos nuestro nombre de usuario y nuestra contraseña y el sitio web no lo reconocerá. Siguen dándote la misma respuesta; El nombre de usuario o la contraseña son incorrectos.

 

Para algunos de nosotros aquí hoy, esto es exactamente lo que se siente en la oración. No podemos entrar en el lugar sagrado donde se escucha y responde la oración porque nuestro nombre de usuario o contraseña es incorrecto.

 

Durante esta serie vamos a ver el Padre Nuestro en Mateo 6 y trataremos de volver a la simplicidad y el propósito de la oración.

 

Mateo 6:5 “Y cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas. Porque les gusta estar de pie y orar en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles, para ser vistos por los demás. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa. 6 Pero cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre que está en secreto. Y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.

7 Y cuando oren, no amontonen frases vacías como hacen los gentiles, porque piensan que serán escuchados por sus muchas palabras. 8 No seáis como ellos, porque vuestro Padre sabe lo que necesitáis antes de que se lo pidáis. 9 Orad, pues, de esta manera:

“Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.

 

Jesús ha escuchado muchas oraciones desde la creación e inmediatamente identifica un par de problemas.

 

Primero, los hipócritas.

En segundo lugar, las oraciones repetitivas.

 

Las instrucciones de Jesús son hacer algo de tiempo, encontrar un lugar e ir a encontrarse con su padre. La Biblia tiene mucho que decir acerca de lo que sucede en ese lugar. Tiene mucho que decir sobre cómo entramos en ese lugar.

 

Hebreos 4:16 Acerquémonos, pues, confiadamente al trono de la gracia, para que recibamos misericordia y hallemos gracia para el oportuno socorro.

 

Hebreos 10:19 Así que, hermanos, ya que tenemos confianza para entrar en los lugares santos  por la sangre de Jesús, 20 por el camino nuevo y vivo que él nos abrió a través de la cortina, es decir, a través de su carne…

 

Salmo 24:3 ¿Quién subirá al monte de Jehová?    ¿Y quién estará en su lugar santo?
4 El que tiene las manos limpias y el corazón puro, el que no eleva su alma a lo falso y no jura con engaño.
5 Recibirá la bendición  del Señor
 y la justicia del Dios de su salvación.
6 Tal es la generación de los que lo buscan, de los que buscan el rostro del Dios de Jacob.

 

Pero si miras hacia atrás en las Escrituras, comenzarás a entender que la oración no es una transacción que hacemos con Dios, en realidad es un espacio que habitamos.

 

La oración es el acto sagrado de conectarse humildemente con la gran abundancia de Dios Padre en la sala del trono de la gracia.

 

Mateo 6:5 “Y cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas. Porque les gusta estar de pie y orar en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles, para ser vistos por los demás. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa. 6 Pero cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre que está en secreto. Y tu Padre,  que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.

7 Y cuando oren, no amontonen frases vacías como hacen los gentiles, porque piensan que serán escuchados por sus muchas palabras. 8 No seáis como ellos, porque vuestro Padre sabe lo que necesitáis antes de que se lo pidáis. 9 Orad, pues, de esta manera:

“Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.

 

El Padre Nuestro comienza con la palabra “padre”. De hecho, Jesús menciona cuatro veces al padre.

• Reza a tu padre en secreto.
• Tu padre te ve y te oye y te responderá.
• Tu padre sabe lo que necesitas.
• Vuestro Padre está en los cielos.

 

Nunca limites tu comprensión de la paternidad de Dios a la experiencia de tu propio padre, sin importar lo bueno o malo que haya sido. Más bien, anímate a saber que Dios no tiene ninguno de los pecados de tu padre, ninguno.

Dios no tiene ninguna de las limitaciones de tu padre.

Dios no tiene ninguna de las debilidades de tu padre,

Y no tiene ninguno de los complejos de tu padre, ninguno de ellos.

Tu Padre celestial nunca te mentirá.

Tu Padre celestial no llega tarde.

Tu Padre celestial no hace promesas que pueda cumplir.

Tu Padre celestial es misericordioso y perdonador.

Tu padre celestial no da miedo.

 

Cuando nos acercamos a la oración, nos acercamos al Padre celestial.

 

Salmo 68:5 Padre de los huérfanos, y protector de las viudas, es Dios en su santa morada.

 

Isaías 64:8 Mas ahora, oh Jehová, tú eres nuestro Padre; nosotros somos el barro, y tú eres nuestro alfarero; todos somos obra de tus manos.

 

1 Juan 3:1 Mirad qué amor nos ha dado el Padre, para que seamos llamados hijos de Dios; y así somos. La razón por la que el mundo no nos conoce es que no lo conoció a él.

 

Romanos 8:15 Porque no recibisteis el espíritu de esclavitud para volver al temor, sino que habéis recibido el Espíritu de adopción como hijos, por el cual clamamos: ¡Abba! ¡Padre!”

 

2 Corintios 6:18 Y yo seré para vosotros padre, y vosotros me seréis hijos e hijas, dice el Señor Todopoderoso.

 

Gálatas 4:6 Y por cuanto sois hijos, Dios ha enviado el Espíritu de su Hijo a nuestros corazones, clamando: ¡Abba! ¡Padre!” 7 Así que ya no eres esclavo, sino hijo, y si hijo, heredero por medio de Dios.

 

Cuando nos presentamos en oración, nuestro primer reconocimiento no es lo que queremos de él, sino que es mostrarnos en una relación.

 

Nuestro Padre que estás en los cielos, santificado o sagrado, es tu nombre.

 

Esta es en realidad la primera petición en el Padre Nuestro.  Es una petición para que el nombre de Dios sea exaltado como sagrado.

 

1 Juan 5:10 El que no cree en Dios, le ha hecho mentiroso, porque no ha creído en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo.

 

¡Veamos lo que DIOS puede hacer!
