Above and Beyond – Psalm 145

 

Throughout the Old Testament we find passages of Scripture where God actually become sarcastic and pokes fun at those who want to substitute his glory for some kind of a lesser idol.

 

Psalm 115, Psalm 135, Isaiah 40, Isaiah 44 and Isaiah 46 are all places where you will find God addressing idol worship.

 

God pokes fun at the people for idol worship. He tells him that the idol that they are worshiping can’t move, can’t hear, can’t speak, can’t save, can’t bring comfort – they can’t do anything. And God wonders why they can’t see this! The idol that they made up and worshiped had no capacity to satisfy them whatsoever. But they could never see it.

 

Why do we do this stuff? It’s because all of us are hardwired to worship. Worship is me declaring what is valuable in my life and sacrificing for and giving myself to every day. We all worship something.

 

Psalm 145 is one of the clearest and most concise descriptions of God. As I read through this Psalm the first thing that I want you to see are the attributes or the character traits of who God is.

 

Psalm 145

1 I will exalt you, my God and King,

    and praise your name forever and ever.  (Not a nameless force)

2 I will praise you every day;

    yes, I will praise you forever.

3 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!

    No one can measure his greatness.

4 Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts;

    let them proclaim your power.

5 I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor

    and your wonderful miracles.

6 Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue;

    I will proclaim your greatness.

 

That’s a good start but maybe that’s a little too impersonal. Now we turn the corner and see the other side of God.

7 Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness;

    they will sing with joy about your righteousness.

8 The Lord is merciful and compassionate,

    slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

9 The Lord is good to everyone.

    He showers compassion on all his creation.

10 All of your works will thank you, Lord,

    and your faithful followers will praise you.

11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom;

    they will give examples of your power.

12 They will tell about your mighty deeds

    and about the majesty and glory of your reign.

13 For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.

    You rule throughout all generations.

The Lord always keeps his promises;

    he is gracious in all he does.

 

Now we see his personal actions.

14 The Lord helps the fallen

    and lifts those bent beneath their loads.

15 The eyes of all look to you in hope;

    you give them their food as they need it.

16 When you open your hand,

    you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.

17 The Lord is righteous in everything he does;

    he is filled with kindness.

18 The Lord is close to all who call on him,

    yes, to all who call on him in truth.

19 He grants the desires of those who fear him;

    he hears their cries for help and rescues them.

20 The Lord protects all those who love him,

    but he destroys the wicked.

21 I will praise the Lord,

    and may everyone on earth bless his holy name

    forever and ever.

 

God’s greatness is God’s “wowness.”

God is great and that means he set apart, sacred and unique in everything.

There is no one like him.

There is nothing like him.

He’s above all the rest.

He’s different than the rest of creation.

There is no duplicate, there is no replica.

His greatness is so great that it can’t even be captured in the pages of the Bible or any of his actions.

He is above and beyond anything that we can ever think or imagine.

 

This is important; when it comes to God, this Scripture tells us of the resounding noise that is coming out of heaven about God.

 

And there is a response to that revelation of God in Psalm 145 from our lives. Let’s look at all of these responses.

 

Psalm 145

1 I will exalt you, my God and King,

    and praise your name forever and ever.

2 I will praise you every day;

    yes, I will praise you forever.

3 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!

    No one can measure his greatness.

4 Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts;

    let them proclaim your power.

This is what we call worship. Remember what worship is? Worship is me declaring what is valuable my life, and when I decide what is valuable I will sacrifice for it, it will dominate my thinking and my time and my money.

 

Hebrews 13:15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

 

Jewish worship was full of sacrifices. When Jews went to the temple, there was always a sacrifice involved.

And sacrifices were not cheap.

Sacrifices usually had some emotional attachment to them – hard to let go of.

Sacrifices always involved the best.

Sacrifices often cost the family a lot.

Sacrifices were always precious.

 

Now let me tell you what praise is. Praise is nothing more than our echo of the noise that is coming out of heaven. Your sacrifice of praise is nothing more than an echo of a sacrifice that God gave for you.Praise is the echo of God’s greatness reverberating off of your life to everyone around you.

 

Whatever noise you are hearing from heaven is reflecting off of you to everyone around you.

 

An above and beyond God deserves above and beyond praise.

He deserves a sacrifice of praise from your lips.

Since he is great he deserves great praise.

Because he is worthy he deserves praise worthy of him.

Because he is mighty he deserves mighty praise.

 

To exalt or extol means to boldly lift.

To bless means to bend your knee.

To praise means to celebrate or rave about something.

To commend means to get loud.

Más allá – Salmo 145

 

A lo largo del Antiguo Testamento encontramos pasajes de las Escrituras en los que Dios se vuelve sarcástico y se burla de aquellos que quieren sustituir su gloria por algún tipo de ídolo menor.

 

El Salmo 115, el Salmo 135, Isaías 40, Isaías 44 e Isaías 46 son lugares donde encontrarás a Dios dirigiéndose a la adoración de ídolos.

 

Dios se burla de la gente por adorar ídolos. Le dice que el ídolo que están adorando no puede moverse, no puede oír, no puede hablar, no puede salvar, no puede traer consuelo, no puede hacer nada. ¡Y Dios se pregunta por qué no pueden ver esto! El ídolo que inventaron y adoraron no tenía capacidad para satisfacerlos en absoluto. Pero nunca pudieron verlo.

 

¿Por qué hacemos estas cosas? Es porque todos estamos programados para adorar. La adoración soy yo declarando lo que es valioso en mi vida y sacrificándome y entregándome a mí mismo cada día. Todos adoramos algo.

 

El Salmo 145 es una de las descripciones más claras y concisas de Dios. Al leer este Salmo, lo primero que quiero que vean son los atributos o los rasgos de carácter de quién es Dios.

 

Salmo 145

1 Te exaltaré, Dios y Rey mío, y alabaré tu nombre por los siglos de los siglos.  (No es una fuerza sin nombre)
2 Te alabaré todos los días;    Sí, te alabaré para siempre.
3 ¡Grande es el Señor! ¡Él es muy digno de alabanza!    Nadie puede medir su grandeza.

4 Que cada generación cuente a sus hijos tus hazañas;    Deja que proclamen tu poder.
5 Meditaré en tu majestuoso  y glorioso esplendor y
 en tus maravillosos milagros.
6 Tus obras espantosas resonarán en todas las lenguas;    Proclamaré tu grandeza.

 

Es un buen comienzo, pero tal vez sea demasiado impersonal. Ahora doblamos la esquina y vemos el otro lado de Dios.

7 Todos compartirán la historia de tu maravillosa bondad;    cantarán con gozo acerca de tu justicia.

8 El Señor es misericordioso y misericordioso, lento para enojarse y lleno de amor inagotable.
9 El Señor es bueno con todos.    Él derrama compasión sobre toda su creación.

10 Todas  tus obras te  lo agradecerán, Señor, y tus fieles seguidores te alabarán.
11 Hablarán de la gloria de tu reino;    Te darán ejemplos de tu poder.
12 Hablarán de tus hazañas
, de la majestad y  de  la  gloria de tu reinado.
13 Porque tu reino es un reino eterno.    Tú gobiernas a través de todas las generaciones.

El Señor siempre cumple sus promesas;    Él es misericordioso en todo lo que hace.

 

Ahora vemos sus acciones personales.

14 El Señor ayuda a los  caídos y levanta a los que están encorvados bajo sus cargas.
15 Los ojos de todos te miran con esperanza;    Les das su comida a medida que la necesitan.
16 Cuando abres tu mano, sacias  el hambre y la sed de todo ser viviente.
17 El Señor es justo en todo lo que hace;    Está lleno de bondad.
18 El Señor está cerca de todos los que lo  invocan, sí, de todos los que lo invocan en verdad.
19 Concede  los  deseos de los que le temen;    Oye  sus gritos de auxilio y los rescata.
20 El Señor protege a  todos los que lo aman, pero destruye a los impíos.

21 Alabaré al Señor, y que todos los habitantes de la tierra bendigan su santo nombre por los siglos de los siglos.

 

La grandeza de Dios es la “asombro” de Dios.

Dios es grande y eso significa que es apartado, sagrado y único en todo.

No hay nadie como él.

No hay nada como él.

Está por encima de todos los demás.

Es diferente al resto de la creación.

No hay duplicado, no hay réplica.

Su grandeza es tan grande que ni siquiera puede ser capturada en las páginas de la Biblia o en cualquiera de sus acciones.

Él está por encima y más allá de cualquier cosa que podamos pensar o imaginar.

 

Esto es importante; cuando se trata de Dios, esta Escritura nos habla del ruido resonante  que viene del cielo acerca de Dios.

 

Y hay una respuesta a esa revelación de Dios en el Salmo 145 de nuestras vidas. Veamos todas estas respuestas.

 

Salmo 145

1 Te exaltaré,  Dios y Rey mío, y alabaré tu nombre por los siglos de los siglos.
2 Te alabaré todos los días;    Sí,  te alabaré para siempre.

Esto es lo que llamamos adoración. ¿Recuerdas lo que es la adoración? La adoración es yo declarando lo que es valioso mi vida, y cuando decido lo que es valioso lo sacrificaré por ello, dominará mi pensamiento, mi tiempo y mi dinero.

 

Hebreos 13:15 Por medio de él, pues, ofrezcamos continuamente sacrificio de alabanza a Dios, es decir, fruto de labios que confiesan su nombre.

 

El culto judío estaba lleno de sacrificios. Cuando los judíos iban al templo, siempre había un sacrificio involucrado.

Y los sacrificios no eran baratos.

Por lo general, los sacrificios tenían algún vínculo emocional con ellos, difícil de dejar ir.

Los sacrificios siempre involucraban a los mejores.

Los sacrificios a menudo le cuestan mucho a la familia.

Los sacrificios siempre fueron preciosos.

 

Ahora déjame decirte lo que es la alabanza. La alabanza no es más que nuestro eco del ruido que viene del cielo. Tu sacrificio de alabanza no es más que un eco de un sacrificio que Dios dio por ti. La alabanza es el eco de la grandeza de Dios que reverbera en tu vida a todos los que te rodean.

 

Cualquier ruido que escuches desde el cielo se refleja en ti para todos los que te rodean.

 

Un Dios de arriba y más allá merece más allá de la alabanza.

Él merece un sacrificio de alabanza de tus labios.

Como es grande, merece grandes elogios.

Porque es digno, merece una alabanza digna de él.

Debido a que es poderoso, merece grandes alabanzas.

 

Exaltar o ensalzar significa levantar con valentía.

Bendecir significa doblar la rodilla.

Alabar significa celebrar o delirar sobre algo.

Elogiar significa hacer ruido.

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
