Advent – Love

 This morning I want to talk to you about an incomprehensible subject. It is a subject that the apostle Paul said surpasses knowledge. The second Sunday of Advent we are talking about love.

 

John 15:9  As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.

 

Abide and live in his love. Make your home in his love.

 

Men and women of God discovered and wrote profusely about this unique, out-of-this-world, one-of-a-kind, love that God longs to pour out into our heart.

 

Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

4 to him who alone does great wonders,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

 

Steadfast love… Often repeated. What kind of love is this?

A love that endures.

A love that endures forever.

A love that will not quit.

A love that will not be discouraged.

A love that is secure and reliable and faithful.

A love that is supremely godly in its nature.

A love that makes God look beautiful.

A love that makes us enjoy his presence, not fear him.

A love that is good for you in all of its aspects.

A love that we rejoice in.

A love that we give thanks for.

A love given by a great God for our good.

 

Abide in this love. 

 

Psalm 118:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

    for his steadfast love endures forever!

2 Let Israel say,

    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

3 Let the house of Aaron say,

    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

4 Let those who fear the Lord say,

    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord;

    the Lord answered me and set me free.

6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.

    What can man do to me?

7 The Lord is on my side as my helper;

    I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord

    than to trust in man.

9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord

    than to trust in princes.

 

This is a love that is personal.

This is a love that is to be celebrated.

 

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations…

 

This is a love that is supremely faithful.

This is a love that shows the glory of who God is.

A love that is to be celebrated.

 

When we read about this thing called steadfast love, or your Bible might call it lovingkindness, it’s a very hard word to translate, it is the most unique love in the whole world. It is a God kind of love.

 

It is a covenantal love. A covenant is a sacred contract entered in by two different people, like a marriage, where promises are made.

 

Steadfast love is the fact that I have no right to expect anything from God, and yet he gives me everything and he won’t stop.

 

It is God unexpectedly offering all of himself and all of the privileges of being his child to those of us who don’t deserve it – and he does it without any strings attached.

 

Steadfast love is inexpressible acts of kindness from God that leave us speechless.

 

Steadfast love is God giving us what we need most when we deserve it the least.

 

Steadfast love is God tying his affections to us and committing himself to someone he knows will never be perfect and will often fail him, but he puts his love upon him anyway because he wants to. He’s committed to it.

 

Steadfast love is a God type of love because it is unlike any other kind of love, anywhere, or shown by anyone.

 

God takes the chance and says, “I love you.” Will you say it back to him?

 

When we move to the New Testament age, we now have Jesus, who is God in the flesh, and he is demonstrating what love looks like. He is love in the flesh.

 

The Bible was written in Greek and the Greeks had several common words for love. Phileo was a word that describes the kind of love you have for friends.

 

Eros was another that basically meant that you are moved by something.

 

But the Bible adopted a new word that we find only four times outside of the Bible text; agape love.

 

Agape love is not a love based on emotion, but it is a love based on the orientation of your will, that you will love someone unconditionally.

 

Here are a few ways that I try to define agape love…

• Agape is seeking the true welfare of someone else.
• Agape is my intentional actions toward others for their good without reservation or limit or discrimination.
• Agape is my acts of kindness toward someone especially when they don’t deserve it.
• Agape is my actions have good toward another person no matter what it might cost me.

The essence of agape love is that God is going to make a move, through Jesus, toward the undeserving people who are currently in a state of undeservedness, and is going to cost Jesus his life, but he’s going to do it anyways knowing that there will be those who will reject it.

 

1 John 3:1 See what kind of love (agape) the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

 

1 John 4:9 (NLT) God showed how much he loved (agape) us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10 This is real love (agape)—not that we loved (agape) God, but that he loved (agape) us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

 

Agape moves our heavenly father to send the answer to our problem and the answer just happens to be God’s only son.

Agape is why Jesus leaves the perfection of heaven and comes down to this filthy planet.

Agape is why Jesus sacrifices his own body.

Agape acted without any assurance that you would love him back.

Agape lays down its rights like Jesus did.

Agape is why Jesus sacrificed himself for your good.

Agape is the infinite kindness of Jesus.

Agape changes your status – your heart – your head – your future – your past – your present – and especially your identity.

 

1 John 4:16 So we have come to know and to believe the love (agape) that God has for us. God is love (agape), and whoever abides in love (agape) abides in God, and God abides in him.

 

God is agape love – it’s all he is in all he does.

 

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love (agape), but perfect love (agape) casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love (agape).

 

When we experience agape we will never have to be afraid anymore.

Agape love is perfect love without any flaw.

Jesus brings his love into the world. We are to abide in this love.

 

 John 15:9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.

 

Ephesians 3:20 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. 19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.

 

We just don’t get how deep God’s redemptive love goes.

We just don’t get how wide God’s love is.

We just don’t get how long God’s love is.

We just don’t get how high his love is.

 

What will it take for you to say to Father God today, to Jesus Christ today, “I love you?”

Adviento – Amor

Esta mañana quiero hablarles de un tema incomprensible. Es un tema que el apóstol Pablo dijo que sobrepasa el conocimiento. El segundo domingo de Adviento estamos hablando del amor.

 

Juan 15:9 Como el Padre me amó, así también yo os he amado a vosotros. Permaneced en mi amor.

 

Permaneced y vivid en su amor. Haz tu hogar en su amor.

 

Hombres y mujeres de Dios descubrieron y escribieron profusamente sobre este amor único, fuera de este mundo, único en su tipo, que Dios anhela derramar en nuestro corazón.

 

Salmo 136:1 Dad gracias al Señor, porque es bueno, porque su misericordia es para siempre.
2 Dad gracias al Dios de los dioses, porque su misericordia es eterna.
3 Dad gracias al Señor de señores, porque su misericordia es eterna;

4 al único que hace grandes maravillas, porque su misericordia es para siempre;

 

Amor inquebrantable… A menudo se repite. ¿Qué clase de amor es este?

Un amor que perdura.

Un amor que dura para siempre.

Un amor que no se rinde.

Un amor que no se desanimará.

Un amor seguro, confiable y fiel.

Un amor que es supremamente piadoso en su naturaleza.

Un amor que hace que Dios se vea hermoso.

Un amor que nos haga disfrutar de su presencia, no temerle.

Un amor que es bueno para ti en todos sus aspectos.

Un amor del que nos regocijamos.

Un amor por el que damos gracias.

Un amor dado por un gran Dios para nuestro bien.

 

Permaneced en este amor.

 

Salmo 118:1 Dad gracias al Señor, porque es bueno;    porque su misericordia es eterna.

2 Diga Israel: “Su misericordia es eterna”.
3 Diga la casa de Aarón: “Su misericordia es eterna”.
4 Que digan los que temen al Señor: “Su misericordia es para siempre”.

5 De mi angustia invoqué al Señor;    el Señor me respondió y me liberó.
6 El Señor está de mi parte; No temeré.    ¿Qué puede hacerme el hombre?
7 El Señor está de mi parte como mi ayudador;    Miraré triunfante a los que me odian.

8 Mejor es refugiarse en el Señor que confiar en el hombre.
9 Mejor es refugiarse en el Señor que confiar en los príncipes.

 

Este es un amor que es personal.

Este es un amor que debe ser celebrado.

 

Deuteronomio 7:9 Sabed, pues, que el  Señor vuestro Dios es Dios, el Dios fiel, que guarda pacto y misericordia con los que le aman y guardan sus mandamientos, por mil generaciones…

 

Este es un amor que es supremamente fiel.

Este es un amor que muestra la gloria de quién es Dios.

Un amor que hay que celebrar.

 

Cuando leemos acerca de esta cosa llamada amor inquebrantable, o su Biblia podría llamarlo bondad amorosa, es una palabra muy difícil de traducir, es el amor más singular en todo el mundo. Es un tipo de amor de Dios.

 

Es un pacto de amor. Un pacto es un contrato sagrado celebrado por dos personas diferentes, como un matrimonio, donde se hacen promesas.

 

El amor inquebrantable es el hecho de que no tengo derecho a esperar nada de Dios y, sin embargo, Él me da todo y no se detiene.

 

Es Dios ofreciéndose, inesperadamente, todo de sí mismo y todos los privilegios de ser su hijo a aquellos de nosotros que no lo merecemos, y lo hace sin condiciones.

 

El amor inquebrantable son actos inexpresables de bondad de Dios que nos dejan sin palabras.

 

El amor inquebrantable es Dios dándonos lo que más necesitamos cuando menos lo merecemos.

 

El amor inquebrantable es Dios atando sus afectos a nosotros y comprometiéndose con alguien que sabe que nunca será perfecto y que a menudo le fallará, pero pone su amor en él de todos modos porque quiere. Está comprometido con ello.

 

El amor inquebrantable es un tipo de amor de Dios porque es diferente a cualquier otro tipo de amor, en cualquier lugar, o mostrado por cualquier persona.

 

Dios se arriesga y dice: “Te amo”. ¿Se lo dirás?

 

Cuando nos movemos a la era del Nuevo Testamento, ahora tenemos a Jesús, que es Dios en la carne, y está demostrando cómo es el amor. Él es amor en la carne.

 

La Biblia fue escrita en griego y los griegos tenían varias palabras comunes para el amor. Phileo era una palabra que describe el tipo de amor que tienes por los amigos.

 

Eros era otro que básicamente significaba que te conmueve algo.

 

Pero la Biblia adoptó una nueva palabra que encontramos solo cuatro veces fuera del texto bíblico; Amor ágape.

 

El amor ágape no es un amor basado en la emoción, sino que es un amor basado en la orientación de tu voluntad, que amarás a alguien incondicionalmente.

 

Aquí hay algunas formas en que trato de definir el amor ágape…

• Ágape busca el verdadero bienestar de otra persona.
• Ágape son mis acciones intencionales hacia los demás para su bien sin reservas, límites o discriminación.
• Ágape es mi acto de bondad hacia alguien, especialmente cuando no se lo merece.
• Ágape es que mis acciones tienen bien hacia otra persona sin importar lo que me cueste.

 

La esencia del amor ágape es que Dios va a hacer un movimiento, a través de Jesús, hacia las personas que no lo merecen y que actualmente están en un estado de inmerecimiento, y le va a costar la vida a Jesús, pero lo va a hacer de todos modos sabiendo que habrá quienes lo rechazarán.

 

1 Juan 3:1 Mirad qué amor (ágape) nos ha dado el Padre, para que seamos llamados hijos de Dios; Y así somos.

 

1 Juan 4:9 (NTV) Dios mostró cuánto nos amaba (ágape) al enviar a su Hijo unigénito al mundo para que pudiéramos tener vida eterna a través de él. 10 Este es el verdadero amor, no que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino que él nos amó a nosotros y envió a su Hijo como sacrificio para quitar nuestros pecados.

 

Ágape mueve a nuestro padre celestial a enviar la respuesta a nuestro problema y la respuesta resulta ser el único hijo de Dios.

El ágape es la razón por la que Jesús deja la perfección del cielo y desciende a este planeta inmundo.

El ágape es la razón por la que Jesús sacrifica su propio cuerpo.

Ágape actuó sin ninguna seguridad de que lo amarías de vuelta.

El ágape renuncia a sus derechos como lo hizo Jesús.

Ágape es la razón por la que Jesús se sacrificó por tu bien.

Ágape es la bondad infinita de Jesús.

El ágape cambia tu estatus, tu corazón, tu cabeza, tu futuro, tu pasado, tu presente y, sobre todo, tu identidad.

 

1 Juan 4:16 Así que hemos llegado a conocer y a creer en el amor (ágape) que Dios tiene por nosotros. Dios es amor (ágape), y quien permanece en amor (ágape) permanece en Dios, y Dios permanece en él.

 

Dios es amor ágape, es todo lo que es en todo lo que hace.

 

1 Juan 4:18 En el amor (ágape) no hay temor (ágape), sino que el perfecto amor (ágape) echa fuera el temor. Porque el temor tiene que ver con el castigo, y el que teme no ha sido perfeccionado en el amor (ágape).

 

Cuando experimentemos el ágape ya no tendremos que tener miedo.

El amor ágape es un amor perfecto sin ningún defecto.

Jesús trae su amor al mundo. Debemos permanecer en este amor.

 

Juan 15:9 Como el Padre me amó, así también yo os he amado a vosotros. Permaneced en mi amor.

 

Efesios 3:20 Y ruego que ustedes y todo el pueblo santo de Dios tengan el poder de entender la grandeza del amor de Cristo, cuán ancho, cuán largo, cuán alto y cuán profundo es ese amor. 19 El amor de Cristo es más grande de lo que nadie puede conocer, pero ruego que ustedes puedan conocer ese amor. Entonces puedes ser lleno de la plenitud de Dios.

 

Simplemente no entendemos cuán profundo es el amor redentor de Dios.

 

Simplemente no entendemos cuán amplio es el amor de Dios.

 

Simplemente no entendemos cuánto dura el amor de Dios.

 

Simplemente no entendemos cuán alto es su amor.

 

¿Qué se necesita para que le digas a Dios Padre hoy, a Jesucristo hoy: “Te amo”?

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
