Hope

The first week of Advent, as we prepare for the coming of Jesus, we celebrate hope. The greatest hope of the world is Jesus Christ. We are told that Jesus in us is the hope of glory.

 

Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness

    have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

    on them has light shone.



6 For to us a child is born,

    to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

    and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and of peace

    there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

    to establish it and to uphold it

with justice and with righteousness

    from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

 

There are the five pillars of the identity of Jesus.

 

Wonderful counselor – he is your most understanding friend in life who offers the most amazing help and wisdom. He gets you.

 

Mighty God – all authority belongs to him and he wields all-encompassing power to fulfill his purposes. This is Jesus.

 

Everlasting father – he is your father with unlimited and unbounded capacity to love you as one of his own.

 

Prince of peace – wherever Jesus shows up he settles the conflicts, he reconciles us to God, to others, to our circumstances and even to ourselves.

 

The ruling government – twice it is mentioned that he brings is reigning kingdom that will expand and will never end. He will rule.

 

When the disciples followed him they were filled with such amazement at the glory and the grace and the truth and the faithfulness of Jesus that they had to put it into a question;

 

Mark 4:41 “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

 

Who is this man? This is a great question.

 

A great historian, Jerislav Pelikan, from Yale put it like this back in the twentieth century- “Regardless of what anyone may personally think or believe about Him, Jesus of Nazareth has been the dominant figure in the history of western culture for almost twenty centuries. If it were possible, with some sort of super-magnet, to pull up out of that history every scrap of metal bearing at least a trace of His name, how much would be left?”(Jerislav Pelikan,Jesus Across the Centuries)

 

To begin with, Jesus gave the world its most influential movement. I don’t know how else to say this. Try to imagine a world with no church.

About this community the Apostle, Paul wrote “Here, in this community, there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and in all.” (Colossians 3:11)

 

Who was this man?

 

He changed how we think about history

 

Who was this Man?

 

Jesus shaped how we express compassion.

 

The Jesus movement shaped education and you’re all about education.

 

The greatest explosion of technology in the middle ages was in Christian monastic communities.

 

The Jesus movement revolutionized art.

 

The Jesus movement changed political theory.

 

 

Jesus changed how we think about human rights and dignity.

 

“There is neither Jew not Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28) Thomas Cahill writes “This is the first expression of women’s rights in human history.

 

Jesus uniquely taught love of enemies.

 

The real question is not “Who was this man?” The real question is “Who IS this man?”

 

And I will tell you who He is.

He is the hinge of history,

He is the hope of the oppressed

He is the inspiration of the despairing,

He is the King of Kings,

He is the Lord of Lords,

He is the greatest teacher that ever lived,

the greatest mind that ever thought,

He offered the greatest gift ever given

and launched the greatest movement ever known.

He demonstrated the greatest love ever known

Spoke the greatest words ever spoken

Made the greatest promises ever given

He is the greatest example to follow

His greatness is amazing, overcoming, surprising, unbounded, unaltered, unreal, unchanged

And has the greatest healing in his tender touch that goes to the body the mind and the heart.

He is simply unparalleled.

He alone mastered life,

He alone conquered death,

He alone overcame sin,

He alone grows more present with every passing year. He is the Son of God,

He is the Glory of human kind,

the crucified carpenter of Nazareth,

He is the Hope of the nations,

and the Saviour of the world,

and that’s who this man is.

Esperanza

La primera semana de Adviento, mientras nos preparamos para la venida de Jesús, celebramos la esperanza. La esperanza más grande del mundo es Jesucristo. Se nos dice que Jesús en nosotros es la esperanza de gloria.

 

Isaías 9:2 El pueblo que andaba en tinieblas ha visto una gran luz; A los que habitaban en una tierra de tinieblas, sobre ellos ha brillado la luz.

6 Porque un niño nos es nacido, un hijo nos es dado; y el principado estará sobre su hombro, y su nombre será llamadoAdmirable Consejero, Dios Fuerte, Padre Eterno, Príncipe de Paz.
7 El aumento de su imperio y de la paz no tendrá fin, ni en el trono de David ni en su reino, para afirmarlo y sostenerlo con justicia y con justicia desde ahora y para siempre. El celo del Señor de los ejércitos hará esto.

 

Ahí están los cinco pilares de la identidad de Jesús.

 

Maravilloso consejero: es tu amigo más comprensivo en la vida que ofrece la ayuda y la sabiduría más increíbles. Él te entiende.

 

Dios poderoso: toda la autoridad le pertenece y él ejerce un poder que lo abarca todo para cumplir sus propósitos. Este es Jesús.

 

Padre eterno: él es tu padre con una capacidad ilimitada e ilimitada para amarte como a uno de los suyos.

 

Príncipe de paz: dondequiera que Jesús aparece, resuelve los conflictos, nos reconcilia con Dios, con los demás, con nuestras circunstancias e incluso con nosotros mismos.

 

El gobierno gobernante: dos veces se menciona que trae su reino reinante que se expandirá y nunca terminará. Él gobernará.

 

Cuando los discípulos lo siguieron, se llenaron de tal asombro por la gloria, la gracia, la verdad y la fidelidad de Jesús, que tuvieron que ponerlo en duda;

 

Marcos 4:41 “¿Quién es, pues, éste, que hasta el viento y el mar le obedecen?”

 

¿Quién es este hombre? Esta es una gran pregunta.

 

Un gran historiador, Jerislav Pelikan, de Yale, lo expresó así en el siglo XX: “Independientemente de lo que alguien pueda pensar o creer personalmente sobre Él, Jesús de Nazaret ha sido la figura dominante en la historia de la cultura occidental durante casi veinte siglos. Si fuera posible, con algún tipo de superimán, arrancar de esa historia todo pedazo de metal que llevara al menos un rastro de Su nombre, ¿cuánto quedaría?” (Jerislav Pelikan, Jesús a través de los siglos)

 

Para empezar, Jesús le dio al mundo su movimiento más influyente. No sé de qué otra manera decir esto. Trata de imaginar un mundo sin iglesia.

Sobre esta comunidad, el apóstol Pablo escribió: “Aquí, en esta comunidad, no hay griego ni judío, circunciso o incircunciso, bárbaro, escita, esclavo o libre, sino que Cristo es todo y en todos”. (Colosenses 3:11.)

Cambió la forma en que pensamos sobre la historia

 

¿Quién era este hombre?

 

Jesús dio forma a la forma en que expresamos la compasión.

 

El movimiento de Jesús dio forma a la educación y tú todo gira en torno a la educación.

 

La mayor explosión de la tecnología en la Edad Media se produjo en las comunidades monásticas cristianas.

 

El movimiento de Jesús revolucionó el arte.

 

El movimiento de Jesús cambió la teoría política.

 

 

Jesús cambió nuestra forma de pensar sobre los derechos humanos y la dignidad.

 

“No hay judío ni griego, esclavo ni libre, hombre ni mujer, porque todos vosotros sois uno en Cristo Jesús” (Gálatas 3:28) Thomas Cahill escribe: “Esta es la primera expresión de los derechos de la mujer en la historia de la humanidad.

 

Jesús enseñó de manera única el amor a los enemigos.

 

La verdadera pregunta no es “¿Quién era este hombre?” La verdadera pregunta es: “¿Quién es este hombre?”

 

Y te diré quién es Él.

Él es la bisagra de la historia,

Él es la esperanza de los oprimidos

Él es la inspiración de los desesperados,

Él es el Rey de Reyes,

Él es el Señor de Señores,

Es el maestro más grande que jamás haya existido,

la mente más grande que jamás haya pensado,

Ofreció el regalo más grande jamás dado

y lanzó el movimiento más grande jamás conocido.

Demostró el amor más grande jamás conocido

Pronunció las palabras más grandiosas jamás pronunciadas

Hizo las mayores promesas jamás dadas

Él es el mejor ejemplo a seguir

Su grandeza es asombrosa, superadora, sorprendente, sin límites, inalterada, irreal, inmutable

Y tiene la mayor sanación en su toque tierno que va al cuerpo, la mente y el corazón.

Es simplemente incomparable.

Sólo Él dominó la vida,

Solo él venció a la muerte,

Solo Él venció el pecado,

Sólo él se hace más presente con cada año que pasa. Él es el Hijo de Dios,

Él es la Gloria de la humanidad,

el carpintero crucificado de Nazaret,

Él es la esperanza de las naciones,

y el Salvador del mundo,

Y eso es lo que es este hombre.

 

¡Veamos lo que DIOS puede hacer!
