The thing in the room

 Let’s talk about the “elephant in the room.”

 The elephant in the room – it’s something that we don’t want to talk about. It’s the thing that everybody knows is there, but we just pretend it’s not there. It’s the problem nobody acknowledges. It’s the thing that we dance around. It’s the unspoken dilemma.

 It’s that thing that always seems to have our attention. And it’s affecting my relationships; my relationship with God – my relationship with the church – my relationship at work – my relationships at home – my relationships with friends.

 

We’re going to take a look at a man who had the prophetic word spoken to him, a word of greatness, and yet he fell fast and he fell hard- the disciple Peter.

 

Luke 22:31“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

 

Luke 22:33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.”

34 But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

 

And then this happens…

 

Luke 22:54 So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance. 55 The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. 56 A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”

57 But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!”

58 After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!”

“No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted.

59 About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” 62 And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

 

Peter wept bitterly.

The man who promised everything fails at the crucial moment.

 

Sin has a habit of screaming at us; “look what you did!”

Sin has a habit of reminding us; “this is always who you will be.”

Sin has a habit of whispering to us; “you know…”

Sin has a habit of shouting at us; “don’t you ever forget…”

Sin has a habit of staining us; “I feel so dirty…”

Sin has a habit of leaving deep regret; “I really blew it…”

Sin has a habit of condemning us; “how could anyone love you after this, especially God.”

 

Sin leaves us full of guilt and shame.

Guilt is felt when we’ve made a mistake and we must make amends for it.

Shame is when we think we are a mistake.

 

So, what are we to do with this? We only have two choices really; we can keep it in the dark or we can bring it to the light.

 

1 John 1:7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

 

John 21:15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

 

In the middle of your failure today I think that Jesus might be asking just one question of you; do you love me?

 

By the way, have you ever thought about what God does with your sin?

 

He tramples them underfoot.

He throws them into the sea.

He blots them out.

He forgets your sins.

He removes your sin.

He takes away your sin.

He cancels the debt of your sin.

He washes your sin.

He forgives your sin.

 

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

 

Hebrews 5:2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward…

 

Are you free this morning?

Can you sing the songs with joy?

Can you pray without guilt clouding your mind?

Can you read the Bible without telling yourself, “I’m excluded?”

Do you love Jesus?

La cosa en la habitación

 

Hablemos del “elefante en la habitación”.

 

El elefante en la habitación: es algo de lo que no queremos hablar. Es lo que todo el mundo sabe que está ahí, pero fingimos que no está ahí. Es el problema que nadie reconoce. Es la cosa alrededor de la cual bailamos. Es el dilema tácito.

 

Es esa cosa que siempre parece tener nuestra atención. Y está afectando a mis relaciones; mi relación con Dios, mi relación con la iglesia, mi relación en el trabajo, mis relaciones en el hogar, mis relaciones con los amigos.

 

Vamos a echar un vistazo a un hombre a quien se le habló la palabra profética, una palabra de grandeza, y sin embargo cayó rápido y cayó con fuerza, el discípulo Pedro.

 

 

Lucas 22:31″Simón, Simón, Satanás ha pedido zarandear a cada uno de vosotros como trigo. 32 Pero yo he rogado por ti, Simón, que tu fe no desfallezca. Así que, cuando te hayas arrepentido y te hayas vuelto a mí, fortalece a tus hermanos”.

 

Lucas 22:33 Pedro dijo: “Señor, estoy dispuesto a ir a la cárcel contigo, y aun a morir contigo”.

34 Pero Jesús le dijo: —Pedro, déjame decirte algo. Antes de que cante el gallo mañana por la mañana, negarás tres veces que me conoces”.

 

Y entonces pasa esto…

 

Lucas 22:54 Y le arrestaron, y le llevaron a casa del sumo sacerdote. Y Pedro lo siguió a distancia. 55 Los guardias encendieron una hoguera en medio del patio y se sentaron alrededor de ella, y Pedro se unió a ellos. 56 Una sirvienta lo vio a la luz del fuego y comenzó a mirarlo. Finalmente dijo: “¡Este hombre era uno de los seguidores de Jesús!”

57 Pero Pedro lo negó. —Mujer —dijo—, ¡ni siquiera lo conozco!

58 Al cabo de un rato, otro lo miró y le dijo: —¡Tú debes ser uno de ellos!

“¡No, hombre, no lo estoy!” —replicó Pedro—.

59 Aproximadamente una hora después, alguien más insistió: “Este debe ser uno de ellos, porque él también es galileo”.

60 Pero Pedro dijo: —Hombre, no sé de qué hablas. E inmediatamente, mientras aún hablaba, cantó el gallo.

61 En ese momento, el Señor se volvió y miró a Pedro. De repente, las palabras del Señor pasaron por la mente de Pedro: “Antes de que cante el gallo mañana por la mañana, negarás tres veces que me conoces”. 62 Y Pedro salió del patio, llorando amargamente.

 

Pedro lloró amargamente.

El hombre que lo prometió todo fracasa en el momento crucial.

 

El pecado tiene la costumbre de gritarnos; “¡Mira lo que hiciste!”

El pecado tiene la costumbre de recordárnoslo; “Esto es siempre lo que serás”.

El pecado tiene la costumbre de susurrarnos; “Ya sabes…”

El pecado tiene la costumbre de gritarnos; “No se te olvide nunca…”

El pecado tiene la costumbre de mancharnos; “Me siento tan sucio…”

El pecado tiene la costumbre de dejar un profundo arrepentimiento; “Realmente lo arruiné…”

El pecado tiene la costumbre de condenarnos; “¿Cómo podría alguien amarte después de esto, especialmente Dios?”

 

El pecado nos deja llenos de culpa y vergüenza.

La culpa se siente cuando hemos cometido un error y debemos enmendarlo.

La vergüenza es cuando pensamos que estamos equivocados.

 

Entonces, ¿qué vamos a hacer con esto? En realidad, solo tenemos dos opciones; Podemos mantenerlo en la oscuridad o podemos sacarlo a la luz.

 

1 Juan 1:7 Pero si vivimos en la luz, como Dios está en la luz, entonces tenemos comunión unos con otros, y la sangre de Jesús, su Hijo, nos limpia de todo pecado.

 

Juan 21:15 Después del desayuno, Jesús preguntó a Simón Pedro: Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que éstos?

“Sí, Señor”, respondió Pedro, “tú sabes que te amo”.

“Entonces apacienta mis corderos”, le dijo Jesús.

16 Jesús repitió la pregunta: «Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?»

“Sí, Señor”, dijo Pedro, “tú sabes que te amo”.

“Entonces cuida de mis ovejas”, dijo Jesús.

17 Y le preguntó por tercera vez: Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?

A Pedro le dolió que Jesús hiciera la pregunta por tercera vez. Él dijo: “Señor, tú lo sabes todo. Sabes que te quiero”.

Jesús dijo: “Entonces apacienta mis ovejas.

18 Les aseguro que cuando eran jóvenes, podían hacer lo que querían; Te vestías y te ibas a donde querías ir. Pero cuando seas viejo, extenderás tus manos, y otros te vestirán y te llevarán a donde no quieres ir”. 19 Jesús dijo esto para que supiera con qué clase de muerte glorificaría a Dios. Entonces Jesús le dijo: “Sígueme”.

 

En medio de tu fracaso de hoy, creo que Jesús podría estar haciéndote una sola pregunta; ¿Me quieres?

 

Por cierto, ¿alguna vez has pensado en lo que Dios hace con tu pecado?

 

Los pisotea.

Los arroja al mar.

Los borra.

Él olvida tus pecados.

Él quita tu pecado.

Él quita tu pecado.

Él cancela la deuda de tu pecado.

Él lava tu pecado.

Él perdona tus pecados.

 

Romanos 8:1 Ahora, pues, ninguna condenación hay para los que están unidos a Cristo Jesús. Porque la ley del Espíritu de vida os ha librado en Cristo Jesús de la ley del pecado y de la muerte.

 

Hebreos 5:2 Él puede tratar con mansedumbre a los ignorantes y descarriados…

 

¿Estás libre esta mañana?

¿Puedes cantar las canciones con alegría?

¿Puedes orar sin que la culpa nuble tu mente?

¿Puedes leer la Biblia sin decirte a ti mismo: “Estoy excluido”?

¿Amas a Jesús?

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
