Riverside Rocks

We’re going to be talking about Riverside rocks until everyone of these rocks on this platform is taken indicating that you have made a pledge toward our future.

 

More about that as we talk this morning.

 

One of the things that I hear most often from people is, “what am I here for?” I especially hear this from some of our older folks who feel like their best days are behind them and they are limited physically and begin to wonder why God still has them on this planet.

 

Sometimes I hear this question, “what am I here for,” like God is keeping a mysterious secret from us. So what we’re going to read in Scripture today is going to answer this question. It’s going to give us the overall, broad picture, of why we’re here.

 

Most of our messages for Riverside rocks is based on God’s commission to Joshua when he told him to lead the Jewish people into the promised land. This one of the most inspiring communications from God to a person in all of Scripture. For Joshua, it was certainly one of the most awesome moments of his life.  It also serves as a commission for Riverside in many ways.

 

Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, 2 “Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

 

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.

 

Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

 

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

 

10 And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’”

 

Two weeks ago when I brought these verses to you we looked at a couple of things.

 

First of all, we looked at the big vision that God gave Joshua. Joshua had already been in the promised land, he saw the fertile fields, he saw the places where families can live, he saw what an awesome place it was. But that was 40 years ago. Once again God asked him to lift his eyes to see the land and told him that wherever he put the sole of his foot, that land would fall and be under God’s power.

 

Two weeks ago we talked about the importance of vision. That when people don’t have a vision of their preferred future, and where God would have them to be, that they will perish, they will just start surviving, they will stop fighting, they will just let go of things.

 

My vision – my picture – of what God wanted me to do started out with things I didn’t want to be in any church that I was involved in.

• Stuff like misspent passion – instead of passion for Jesus we would be all passionate about whether drinking coffee was a sin or not.
• And stuff like overlooking our sins but not overlooking other people sins. Gossiping was okay but those people living together, well…
• How fiscally responsible we were for not giving a homeless man $1 because we didn’t know how we was going to spend it, but it was okay to upgrade to an 85 inch TV just in time for the Super Bowl. And, when we don’t like something at church, it was also the responsible thing to withhold any giving to teach everybody a lesson.
• Or how the church was a club…and it was hard to get into the inner circle.

 

I was so done with that kind of church.

 

But God gave me a vision for something else. Not to be the biggest church. Not to be the most cutting-edge church. Not to be the most spectacular church. But to be a church…

• Where there would be a consistent outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the heart of people changing us to be more like Jesus.
• A church that was marked by love – love for Jesus, a love for his word and love for the people of Jesus.
• A church so inhabited by Jesus that even a person walking through our parking lot would wonder what was happening to them.
• The church that was more concerned about generosity to others instead of how much were spending on ourselves.
• A church where a confused person would come in and leave with clarity.
• Where a skeptic would come in and leave in love with Jesus.
• Where the empty could come in and leave filled.
• Where people could limp in, but they would be running out.
• Where the broken with leave whole again.
• Where those scarred by sin would leave forgiven.

 

Is there more to the vision?

 

Yes. A children’s ministry where kids don’t just hear about Jesus, they actually experience him and they also experience unconditional love from those who serve them. Kids who will grow up with a solid foundation.

 

And while we’re talking about kids… I know that God’s put it on my heart that we are to do something about the loss of confidence that parents have in the school system. We already host homeschoolers here every Monday, but it’s something more than that. I’m not sure what it is yet, but we have 5 acres that we can utilize to possibly give parents an alternative.

 

Is there more? How about a youth ministry where radical life change is happening? A safe space where every teen is loved and taught the word of God and they can see Christ lived out in front of them through their leaders godly examples.

 

And I can keep going.

 

This church is a very special place.

I always tell people, “what you see is what you get.”

We may not be perfect, but we try to be loving.

Our music may not be perfect, but it’s authentic.

The preaching may make you uncomfortable at times, but it comes from a heart filled with the spirit.

We are a wide and diverse group of people that God has molded into a family.

And we are not ashamed of the Bible – we still believe there is no better teaching, no better way then what this book reveals. We stand by it no matter what.

 

This is a place where heaven is interacting with earth!

 

This whole Riverside rocks campaign is about doing something for this building – $65,000 worth – to make it more inviting – but we want to give it a new look because I want to give the keys of this building to the next generation and say, “go for it. We’ve had our day, and now it’s your day.”

 

In this campaign were asking you to pledge something.

For every $250 you pledge take a rock.

Pay your pledge until the end of March 2024.

Every time you pay enough to bring one of those rocks back, throw it outside.

 

There’s a couple of verses in this commission of Joshua that I want us to focus on this morning. And here’s the first one…

 

Joshua 1:6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

 

This little verse has moved my heart.

This verse has a giant idea attached to it.

Do you see it?

 

God is telling Joshua that the purpose of his life is way bigger than just himself; the purpose of his life is to cause other people to inherit the land. Joshua was a means to Gods end. And what God wanted was for a million people who are camped on the side of the Jordan River to go into that land and own it.

Joshua would be the one who caused that to happen.

Joshua would be the catalyst.

Joshua would lead the way.

Joshua would put his life out there first.

 

Let’s capture this vision. Riverside Church must be strong and courageous because we exist to cause other people to inherit what God has for them.

 

All my life as a pastor I been involved in different roles within the larger church body. Leadership roles. And one thing that I have seen over and over again are people who fight for the property of the church.

People who have invested significantly in the physical buildings of the church and feel like it is their job to guard those buildings – almost like they own them.

They will fight with pastors.

They will fight with people.

They will stand up in business meetings.

They will organize groups to rally to their side.

And it’s always about who’s going to control the property which is what they think the church is.

 

But I have rarely seen church people who really get this concept that we are here to cause other people to inherit the land. We are not here to guard the building. We are here to guard this vision and this idea that everything that we have here is God’s means to his end which is to cause others to inherit the land – to cause others to come into a dynamic and living relationship with Jesus Christ.

 

I’m going to repeat something from two weeks ago. God told Joshua that he would cause others to inherit the land, that the mission of his life was not for his own inheritance but it was for others to receive their inheritance.

 

The answer to the question, “what are we here for,” we are here to cause people to inherit the land.

 

It’s this whole idea of the empty chair.

The person who is not here yet.

The person who’s coming to sit in this chair.

The person who has been invited by someone to sit in this chair.

The person who somebody is praying for their kid or friend to sit in this chair.

The person who is at their wits end who is trying church one more time and will sit in this chair.

 

We are here for the person who is not here yet.

We are here to cause someone to inherit the land God has for them.

You are here for the person who will occupy this seat.

 

And this person is going to need to come into a building full of graceful and loving people. Are you fighting for that?

And this person doesn’t need any more shallow and remote-controlled religion – they are going to need to meet Jesus at the throne of grace. Are you praying and fighting for that to happen?

And this person is going to need to get connected with other Jesus followers who can help him or her on their way with their newfound faith. Are you praying and fighting for that to happen?

 

Somebody before you got here laid down their life in order to cause you to inherit the promised land. And now you are here to cause someone else to inherit the promised land.

 

Don’t ever lose sight of that vision.

 

When we lose sight of the fact that we are here to cause someone to inherit the promised land, do know what happens?

• We get mad about kids running around the church building.
• We vent about how church isn’t the way it used to be.
• It bugs us that the teenager takes three doughnuts and “somebody ought to do something about that.”
• Or we get fixated on what people are wearing on a Sunday morning and whether you approve or not.
• Or we show up late.

 

We are here for people who haven’t found their chair yet. God told Joshua that he would cause other people to inherit the land. His life would be laid down for greater cause just as own.

 

Joshua wasn’t going to be “me first.”

Joshua wasn’t going to get his piece and be done.

So often we see our lives as a means to our own end – God wants us to lay down our life as a means to his end.

 

There is a temptation to settle.

 

Settling. Do know that Joshua had to fight this mentality? All the Jewish people had settled on one side of the Jordan River and the promised land was on the other side of the Jordan River. At first some of them didn’t want to go over to the promised land. They didn’t mind the life that they were living. It was adequate. It was ordinary. It was predictable. It was livable. It was okay.

 

But it wasn’t the promised land. We can settle where we are. But this is in everything God has for us. But to get what God has for us to have to battle for it. This could have to be some faith. Some sacrifices. Some sleepless nights. Some blisters. Some anxious moments.

 

But that’s where we are going.

 

And when I pray – I lay down this church, our property, our bank accounts, our ministries, our people, our land, our ideas, our dreams as a means to God’s end.

 

That is what Riverside rocks is all about – it’s about doing something now for those who are coming along after us. When I’m done here, when God is finished with me at this place, I want to hand over the keys of the Riverside car to the next guy but I want to hand over the keys of a 1994 pickup truck – I want to hand over the keys of one of those really super cool looking Corvettes.

 

So, one more thing out of this passage of Scripture today.

 

What does God require of Joshua to lead this people?

What does God require of you to lead your people?

What are we going to need to get to this place, this promised land?

 

Let me read this Scripture again…

 

Joshua 1:5  Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

 

… 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

 

We are going to need an anointing of God’s power. That’s what Joshua needed. That’s what we need.

 

What is the anointing? Something that is placed upon your life in order for you to be made useful to God and bring others into a better place.

 

God has anointed you to lead – starting with yourself, moving to your family, and then from there to other people.

 

Look at this passage. Joshua is supposed to have confidence and courage. And where does he get this from? Does he look inside of himself? No, he looks outside of himself.

 

Just as I was with Moses.

Just as “I.”

He’s the God of the over and above.

He tells Joshua to remember how great he was in the life of Moses and tells him to expect the same.

We sometimes sit around and fret and treat godlike he scarce, stingy, unwilling, unreliable, unpredictable.

That is not our God.

He is the God of the over and above.

The God of more than enough.

The God of resurrection power.

The God of surprise endings.

The God with a heavenly storehouse.

The God of abundant life.

 

He tells Joshua “as I was with…”

“I will be

I will not leave

I will never be helpless

I will never let go

I will never loosen my grip

I will not forsake you

I will never leave you behind

I will never depart

I will never be absent

I will never turn my back

I will never walk out

I will be with you

I will be with you wherever you are

I will be ahead of you

I will be behind you

I will be in the moment with you”

 

this is the basis of our confidence.

 

Is God going to stop being God because of the economy?

Is God going to stop being God because of high gas prices?

Is God going to stop being God because my kids strayed?

Is God going to stop being God because my income or job changed?

Is God going to stop being God because we want to raise a little money?

Is God going to stop being God because cancer showed up?

 

Because God knows he’s never gonna stop being God he tells Joshua to be strong and courageous. To not be frightened by anything. To not be terrorized. To not be discouraged. To not be shattered. To not be shocked. To not be dismayed.

 

The courage for the moment is it based on anything in us, it’s based on who God is.

 

So, to quote Randy StoneHill, swan dive baby into your irresistible future.

 

The courage, the steadfastness of one person can be the catalyst for many others to inherit the promised land.

 

And let me just say, this is the normal Christian life. Anything less than trusting God at this level is not normal.

 

What is being called out of Riverside is that we will be a church that causes many people to inherit the promised land. We have been saved for this.

We have been chosen for this.

We have been forgiven for this.

We have been gifted for this.

We have been equipped for this.

We have been filled for this.

We have been provided for for this.

We have been placed here for this.

 

And to do this we will need to be strong and courageous no matter what it looks like, no matter what it feels like, no matter what it seems like – we are strong and courageous because we know that we have an anointing to do this job.

 

Stop being scared.

Stop being fearful.

Stop talking about how the devil is winning.

The Jewish people thought the cities were too big to take.

The walls were too thick.

That the enemy’s weapons were too powerful.

They were too well organized.

 

But they had forgotten that the same God that delivered them out of Egypt was the same God that would take him into the promised land and he’s the same God that is with us today.

 

 

This is a moment.

This is an ordained time.

 

But I want to tell you this is just a warm-up act.

This is just a small little skirmish in a bigger battle that will come later.

This is just a small first step.

This is me just saying, “I wonder if these people will buy into doing something.”

This is a moment to say to yourself, “there is something bigger going on here than just me.”

This is a moment to arise and fight and give.

 

Let me just say, we can’t do normal. Don’t come into this moment and say this, “I’ve calculated things out, I’ve met with my financial advisor, and I’ve determined that I can give this much without it having an effect on my standard of living and my comfort.”

 

That takes no faith. Nobody stands in awe of that. Nobody is applauding playing it safe and being careful.

 

I mean, I appreciate anything whatever is given, but Joshua was on the edge of going into the promised land and it was going to take something way more than normal to win the battle.

 

So, show some heart. Show some faith. Show some desire. Show some belief.

 

Let’s do this thing.

 

I want to invite you to a better place.

To kick up some dust.

To make the enemy mad.

To prepare this place for those who aren’t here yet.

To stop doing the normal

 

Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

 

Let’s see what GOD can do!

Vamos a estar hablando de rocas de Riverside hasta que cada una de estas rocas en esta plataforma o tomada indique que han hecho una promesa hacia nuestro futuro.

 

Más sobre eso mientras hablamos esta mañana.

 

Una de las cosas que escucho con más frecuencia de la gente es: “¿Para qué estoy aquí?” Especialmente escucho esto de algunas de nuestras personas mayores que sienten que sus mejores días han quedado atrás y están limitados físicamente y comienzan a preguntarse por qué Dios todavía los tiene en este planeta.

 

A veces escucho esta pregunta, “¿para qué estoy aquí?”, como si Dios nos estuviera ocultando un misterioso secreto. Así que lo que vamos a leer en las Escrituras hoy va a responder a esta pregunta. Nos va a dar el panorama general y amplio de por qué estamos aquí.

 

La mayoría de nuestros mensajes para Riverside Rocks se basan en la comisión de Dios a Josué cuando le dijo que guiara al pueblo judío a la tierra prometida. Esta es una de las comunicaciones más inspiradoras de Dios a una persona en toda la Escritura. Para Joshua, fue sin duda uno de los momentos más impresionantes de su vida.  También sirve como una comisión para Riverside de muchas maneras.

 

Josué 1:1 Después de la muerte de Moisés, el siervo del Señor, el Señor le dijo a Josué, hijo de Nun, ayudante de Moisés, 2 “Ahora, levántate, ve sobre este Jordán, tú y todo este pueblo, a la tierra que les doy, al pueblo de Israel. 3 Te he dado todo lugar que pisará la planta de tu pie, tal como se lo prometí a Moisés.

 

4 Desde el desierto y este Líbano hasta el gran río, el río Éufrates, toda la tierra de los hititas hasta el Gran Mar hacia la puesta del sol será tu territorio. 5 Ningún hombre podrá estar delante de ti todos los días de tu vida.

 

Así como yo estaba con Moisés, así estaré contigo. No te dejaré ni te abandonaré. 6 Sé fuerte y valiente, porque harás que este pueblo herede la tierra que juré a sus padres que les daría. 7 Solo sé fuerte y muy valiente, teniendo cuidado de hacer de acuerdo con toda la ley que Moisés mi siervo te ordenó. No te desvíes de ella hacia la derecha o hacia la izquierda, para que puedas tener buen éxito donde quiera que vayas.

 

8 Este Libro de la Ley no se apartará de tu boca, sino que meditarás en él día y noche, para que tengas cuidado de hacer de acuerdo con todo lo que está escrito en él. Porque entonces harás tu camino próspero, y entonces tendrás buen éxito. 9 ¿No os he mandado? Sé fuerte y valiente. No te asustes, y no te desanimes, porque el Señor tu Dios está contigo dondequiera que vayas”.

 

10 Y Josué mandó a los oficiales del  pueblo: 11 “Pasad por en medio del campamento y mandad al pueblo: ‘Prepara tus provisiones, porque dentro de tres días pasarás por este Jordán para entrar a tomar posesión de la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te está dando para poseer'”.

 

Hace dos semanas, cuando les traje estos versículos, vimos un par de cosas.

 

En primer lugar, vimos la gran visión que Dios le dio a Josué. Josué ya había estado en la tierra prometida, vio los campos fértiles, vio los lugares donde las familias pueden vivir, vio qué lugar tan asombroso era. Pero eso fue hace 40 años. Una vez más, Dios le pidió que levantara los ojos para ver la tierra y le dijo que dondequiera que pusiera la planta de su pie, esa tierra caería y estaría bajo el poder de Dios.

 

Hace dos semanas hablamos sobre la importancia de la visión. Que cuando las personas no tienen una visión de su futuro preferido, y donde Dios quiere que estén, que perecerán, simplemente comenzarán a sobrevivir, dejarán de luchar, simplemente dejarán ir las cosas.

 

Mi visión, mi imagen, de lo que Dios quería que hiciera comenzó con cosas  que no quería que estuvieran en ninguna iglesia en la que estuviera involucrado.

• Cosas como la pasión malgastada: en lugar de la pasión por Jesús, a todos nos apasionaría si beber café era un pecado o no.
• Y cosas como pasar por alto nuestros pecados pero no pasar por alto los pecados de otras personas. Los chismes estaban bien, pero esas personas que vivían juntas, bueno…
• Cuán fiscalmente responsables éramos por no darle a un hombre sin hogar $ 1 porque no sabíamos cómo lo íbamos a gastar, pero estaba bien actualizar a un televisor de 85 pulgadas justo a tiempo para el Super Bowl. Y, cuando no nos gusta algo en la iglesia, también era responsable retener cualquier donación para enseñar a todos una lección.
• O cómo la iglesia era un club… Y era difícil entrar en el círculo interno.

 

Estaba tan hecho con ese tipo de iglesia.

 

Pero Dios me dio una visión para otra cosa. No para ser la iglesia más grande. No para ser la iglesia más vanguardista. No para ser la iglesia más espectacular. Pero ser una iglesia…

• Donde habría un derramamiento constante del Espíritu Santo en el corazón de las personas que nos cambiarían para ser más como Jesús.
• Una iglesia que estaba marcada por el amor: amor por Jesús, amor por su palabra y amor por el pueblo de Jesús.
• Una iglesia tan habitada por Jesús que incluso una persona que camina por nuestro estacionamiento se preguntaría qué le estaba pasando.
• La iglesia que estaba más preocupada por la generosidad hacia los demás en lugar de cuánto gastábamos en nosotros mismos.
• Una iglesia donde una persona confundida entraría y se iría con claridad.
• Donde un escéptico entraría y se iría enamorado de Jesús.
• Donde el vacío podría entrar y salir lleno.
• Donde la gente podría cojear, pero se les acabaría.
• Donde los rotos con dejan entero de nuevo.
• Donde los marcados por el pecado saldrían perdonados.

 

¿Hay algo más en la visión?

 

Sí. Un ministerio de niños donde los niños no solo escuchan acerca de Jesús, sino que realmente lo experimentan y también experimentan el amor incondicional de aquellos que les sirven. Niños que crecerán con una base sólida.

 

Y ya que hablamos de niños… Sé que Dios ha puesto en mi corazón que debemos hacer algo con respecto a la pérdida de confianza que los padres tienen en el sistema escolar. Ya recibimos educadores en el hogar aquí todos los lunes, pero es algo más que eso. Todavía no estoy seguro de qué es, pero tenemos 5 acres que podemos utilizar para posiblemente dar a los padres una alternativa.

 

¿Hay más? ¿Qué tal un ministerio juvenil donde está ocurriendo un cambio radical en la vida? Un espacio seguro donde cada adolescente es amado y enseñado la palabra de Dios y pueden ver a Cristo vivido frente a ellos a través de sus líderes ejemplos piadosos.

 

Y puedo seguir adelante.

 

Esta iglesia es un lugar muy especial.

Siempre le digo a la gente: “lo que ves es lo que obtienes”.

Puede que no seamos perfectos, pero tratamos de ser amorosos.

Nuestra música puede no ser perfecta, pero es auténtica.

La predicación puede hacerte sentir incómodo a veces, pero proviene de un corazón lleno del espíritu.

Somos un grupo amplio y diverso de personas que Dios ha moldeado en una familia.

Y no nos avergonzamos de la Biblia, todavía creemos que no hay mejor enseñanza, no hay mejor manera que lo que revela este libro. Lo defendemos pase lo que pase.

 

¡Este es un lugar donde el cielo está interactuando con la tierra!

 

Toda esta campaña de Riverside rocks se trata de hacer algo por este edificio, un valor de $ 65,000, para hacerlo más atractivo, pero queremos darle un nuevo aspecto porque quiero darle las llaves de este edificio a la próxima generación y decir: “adelante. Hemos tenido nuestro día, y ahora es tu día”.

 

En esta campaña te pedíamos que prometieras algo.

Por cada $250 que prometas toma una piedra.

Pague su promesa hasta finales de marzo de 2024.

Cada vez que pagues lo suficiente para traer una de esas piedras de vuelta, tírala afuera.

 

Hay un par de versículos en esta comisión de Josué en los que quiero que nos enfoquemos esta mañana. Y aquí está el primero…

 

Josué 1:6 Sé fuerte y valiente, porque harás que este pueblo herede la tierra que juré a sus padres que les daría.

 

Este pequeño versículo ha conmovido mi corazón.

Este versículo tiene una idea gigante adjunta.

¿Lo ves?

 

Dios le está diciendo a Josué que el propósito de su vida es mucho más grande que solo él mismo; El propósito de su vida es hacer que otras personas hereden la tierra. Josué era un medio para el fin de Dios. Y lo que Dios quería era que un millón de personas que están acampadas al lado del río Jordán fueran a esa tierra y la poseyeran.

Josué sería quien causó que eso sucediera.

Josué sería el catalizador.

Josué lideraría el camino.

Josué pondría su vida allí primero.

 

Vamos a capturar esta visión. La Iglesia Riverside debe ser fuerte y valiente porque existimos para hacer que otras personas hereden lo que Dios tiene para ellos.

 

Toda mi vida como pastor he estado involucrado en diferentes roles dentro del cuerpo de la iglesia más grande. Roles de liderazgo. Y una cosa que he visto una y otra vez son personas que luchan por la propiedad de la iglesia.

Personas que han invertido significativamente en los edificios físicos de la iglesia y sienten que es su trabajo proteger esos edificios, casi como si fueran sus dueños.

Pelearán con los pastores.

Lucharán con la gente.

Se pondrán de pie en reuniones de negocios.

Organizarán grupos para unirse a su lado.

Y siempre se trata de quién va a controlar la propiedad, que es lo que creen que es la iglesia.

 

Pero rara vez he visto personas de la iglesia que realmente entiendan este concepto de que estamos aquí para hacer que otras personas hereden la tierra. No estamos aquí para proteger el edificio. Estamos aquí para guardar esta visión y esta idea de que todo lo que tenemos aquí es el medio de Dios para su fin, que es hacer que otros hereden la tierra, hacer que otros entren en una relación dinámica y viva con Jesucristo.

 

Voy a repetir algo de hace dos semanas. Dios le dijo a Josué que haría que otros heredaran la tierra, que la misión de su vida no era para su propia herencia, sino que era para que otros recibieran su herencia.

 

La respuesta a la pregunta, “¿para qué estamos aquí?”, estamos aquí para hacer que la gente herede la tierra.

 

Es toda esta idea de la silla vacía.

La persona que aún no está aquí.

La persona que viene a sentarse en esta silla.

La persona que ha sido invitada por alguien a sentarse en esta silla.

La persona que alguien está orando para que su hijo o amigo se siente en esta silla.

La persona que está al final de su ingenio que está tratando de ir a la iglesia una vez más y se sentará en esta silla.

 

Estamos aquí para la persona que aún no está aquí.

Estamos aquí para hacer que alguien herede la tierra que Dios tiene para ellos.

Usted está aquí para la persona que ocupará este asiento.

 

Y esta persona va a necesitar entrar en un edificio lleno de gente elegante y amorosa. ¿Estás luchando por eso?

Y esta persona no necesita más religión superficial y controlada a distancia, va a necesitar encontrarse con Jesús en el trono de la gracia. ¿Estás orando y luchando para que eso suceda?

Y esta persona va a necesitar conectarse con otros seguidores de Jesús que puedan ayudarlo en su camino con su nueva fe. ¿Estás orando y luchando para que eso suceda?

 

Alguien antes de que llegaras aquí dio su vida para hacerte heredar la tierra prometida. Y ahora estás aquí para hacer que alguien más herede la tierra prometida.

 

Nunca pierdas de vista esa visión.

 

Cuando perdemos de vista el hecho de que estamos aquí para hacer que alguien herede la tierra prometida, ¿saben lo que sucede?

• Nos enojamos con los niños que corren alrededor del edificio de la iglesia.
• Nos desahogamos sobre cómo la iglesia no es como solía ser.
• Nos molesta que el adolescente tome tres rosquillas y “alguien debería hacer algo al respecto”.
• O nos obsesionamos con lo que la gente lleva puesto un domingo por la mañana y si lo apruebas o no.
• O llegamos tarde.

 

Estamos aquí para las personas que aún no han encontrado su silla. Dios le dijo a Josué que haría que otras personas heredaran la tierra. Su vida sería entregada por una causa mayor al igual que la propia.

 

Josué no iba a ser “yo primero”.

Josué no iba a conseguir su parte y terminar.

Muy a menudo vemos nuestras vidas como un medio para nuestro propio fin: Dios quiere que demos nuestra vida como un medio para su fin.

 

Existe la tentación de conformarse.

 

Sedimento. ¿Sabes que Josué tuvo que luchar contra esta mentalidad? Todo el pueblo judío se había asentado a un lado del río Jordán y la tierra prometida estaba al otro lado del río Jordán. Al principio, algunos de ellos no querían ir a la tierra prometida. No les importaba la vida que estaban viviendo. Era adecuado. Era normal. Era predecible. Era habitable. Estaba bien.

 

Pero no era la tierra prometida. Podemos establecernos donde estamos. Pero esto está en todo lo que Dios tiene para nosotros. Pero para obtener lo que Dios tiene para nosotros tenemos que luchar por ello. Esto podría tener que ser algo de fe. Algunos sacrificios. Algunas noches de insomnio. Algunas ampollas. Algunos momentos de ansiedad.

 

Pero ahí es donde vamos.

 

Y cuando oro, dejo esta iglesia, nuestra propiedad, nuestras cuentas bancarias, nuestros ministerios, nuestra gente, nuestra tierra, nuestras ideas, nuestros sueños como un medio para el fin de Dios.

 

De eso se trata Riverside Rocks: se trata de hacer algo ahora para aquellos que vienen después de nosotros. Cuando termine aquí, cuando Dios termine conmigo en este lugar, quiero entregar las llaves del auto de Riverside al siguiente tipo, pero quiero entregar las llaves de una camioneta de 1994, quiero entregar las llaves de uno de esos Corvettes realmente geniales.

 

Entonces, una cosa más de este pasaje de las Escrituras hoy.

 

¿Qué requiere Dios de Josué para guiar a este pueblo?

¿Qué requiere Dios de ti para guiar a tu pueblo?

¿Qué vamos a necesitar para llegar a este lugar, a esta tierra prometida?

 

Permítanme leer esta Escritura de nuevo…

 

Josué 1:5 Así como yo estaba con Moisés, así estaré contigo. No te dejaré ni te abandonaré. 6 Sé fuerte y valiente, porque harás que este pueblo herede la tierra que juré a sus padres que les daría.

 

… 9 ¿No os he mandado? Sé fuerte y valiente. No te asustes, y no te desanimes, porque el Señor tu Dios está contigo dondequiera que vayas”.

 

Vamos a necesitar una unción del poder de Dios. Eso es lo que Josué necesitaba. Eso es lo que necesitamos.

 

¿Qué es la unción? Algo que se coloca en tu vida para que seas útil a Dios y lleves a otros a un lugar mejor.

 

Dios te ha ungido para liderar, comenzando contigo mismo, pasando a tu familia y luego de allí a otras personas.

 

Mira este pasaje. Se supone que Josué tiene confianza y coraje. ¿Y de dónde saca esto? ¿Mira dentro de sí mismo? No, él mira fuera de sí mismo.

 

Tal como estaba con Moisés.

Al igual que “yo”.

Él es el Dios de lo de arriba y de arriba.

Le dice a Josué que recuerde lo grande que fue en la vida de Moisés y le dice que espere lo mismo.

A veces nos sentamos y nos preocupamos y tratamos como a Dios como si fuera escaso, tacaño, reacio, poco confiable, impredecible.

Ese no es nuestro Dios.

Él es el Dios de lo superior y lo superior.

El Dios de más que suficiente.

El Dios del poder de la resurrección.

El Dios de los finales sorpresa.

El Dios con un almacén celestial.

El Dios de la vida abundante.

 

Él le dice a Josué “como yo estaba con…”

“Seré

No me iré

Nunca estaré indefenso

Nunca lo dejaré ir

Nunca aflojaré mi agarre

No te abandonaré

Nunca te dejaré atrás

Nunca me iré

Nunca estaré ausente

Nunca le daré la espalda

Nunca saldré

Estaré contigo

Estaré contigo dondequiera que estés

Estaré delante de ti

Estaré detrás de ti

Estaré en el momento contigo”

 

Esta es la base de nuestra confianza.

 

¿Va a dejar Dios de ser Dios debido a la economía?

¿Dios va a dejar de ser Dios debido a los altos precios de la gasolina?

¿Dios va a dejar de ser Dios porque mis hijos se desviaron?

¿Dios va a dejar de ser Dios porque mis ingresos o mi trabajo cambiaron?

¿Dios va a dejar de ser Dios porque queremos recaudar un poco de dinero?

¿Dios va a dejar de ser Dios porque apareció el cáncer?

 

Porque Dios sabe que nunca va a dejar de ser Dios, le dice a Josué que sea fuerte y valiente. Para no asustarse por nada. Para no ser aterrorizado. Para no desanimarse. Para no ser destrozado. Para no sorprenderse. Para no desanimarse.

 

El coraje por el momento se basa en cualquier cosa en nosotros, se basa en quién es Dios.

 

Entonces, para citar a Randy StoneHill, bebé de buceo cisne en su futuro irresistible.

 

El coraje, la firmeza de una persona puede ser el catalizador para que muchos otros hereden la tierra prometida.

 

Y permítanme decir, esta es la vida cristiana normal. Cualquier cosa menos que confiar en Dios en este nivel no es normal.

 

Lo que se está llamando fuera de Riverside es que seremos una iglesia que hace que muchas personas hereden la tierra prometida. Hemos sido salvados para esto.

Hemos sido elegidos para esto.

Hemos sido perdonados por esto.

Hemos sido dotados para esto.

Hemos sido equipados para esto.

Hemos sido llenos para esto.

Hemos sido provistos para ello.

Hemos sido colocados aquí para esto.

 

Y para hacer esto, tendremos que ser fuertes y valientes, sin importar cómo se vea, sin importar cómo se sienta, sin importar cómo parezca, somos fuertes y valientes porque sabemos que tenemos una unción para hacer este trabajo.

 

Deja de tener miedo.

Deja de tener miedo.

Deja de hablar de cómo el diablo está ganando.

El pueblo judío pensaba que las ciudades eran demasiado grandes para tomarlas.

Las paredes eran demasiado gruesas.

Que las armas del enemigo eran demasiado poderosas.

Estaban demasiado bien organizados.

 

Pero habían olvidado que el mismo Dios que los liberó de Egipto era el mismo Dios que lo llevaría a la tierra prometida y él es el mismo Dios que está con nosotros hoy.

 

 

Este es un momento.

Este es un tiempo ordenado.

 

Pero quiero decirles que esto es solo un acto de calentamiento.

Esto es solo una pequeña escaramuza en una batalla más grande que vendrá más tarde.

Este es solo un pequeño primer paso.

Este soy yo diciendo: “Me pregunto si estas personas aceptarán hacer algo”.

Este es un momento para decirte a ti mismo: “hay algo más grande sucediendo aquí que solo yo”.

Este es un momento para levantarse, luchar y dar.

 

Permítanme decir que no podemos hacer lo normal. No entres en este momento y digas esto: “He calculado las cosas, me he reunido con mi asesor financiero y he determinado que puedo dar tanto sin que tenga un efecto en mi nivel de vida y mi comodidad”.

 

Eso no requiere fe. Nadie se asombra de eso. Nadie aplaude ir a lo seguro y tener cuidado.

 

Quiero decir, aprecio todo lo que se da, pero Josué estaba a punto de entrar en la tierra prometida e iba a tomar algo mucho más de lo normal para ganar la batalla.

 

Entonces, muestra un poco de corazón. Muestre algo de fe. Muestra algo de deseo. Muestre algo de creencia.

 

Hagamos esto.

 

Quiero invitarte a un lugar mejor.

Para levantar un poco de polvo.

Para hacer enojar al enemigo.

Para preparar este lugar para aquellos que aún no están aquí.

Para dejar de hacer lo normal

 

Así como yo estaba con Moisés, así estaré contigo.

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
