Pray – praying glory prayers

For the next four weeks we are going to take some time to look at prayer especially in John 14, 15 and 16. In these passages it’s almost as if Jesus is tossing the keys of prayer to the disciples and telling them to use the power of his name to ask for things to happen.

 

This morning we talk about glory praying.

 

John 14:12  “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

 

Let’s read these verses in greater context. This will set up the context for learning how to pray glory prayers.

 

John 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

 

This is a parallel passage that happened after a powerful healing in which they question how Jesus did it.

 

John 5:19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.

 

Now, let’s do a little Bible study about what Jesus is saying. All of these prayer verses have a perimeter around them. In other words, there is a boundary when using the power of prayer.

 

Notice what Jesus is saying; Jesus and his Father are working together with one heart, one mind and one purpose. Jesus and the Father are always working together, in tandem and all of his works originated with the Father. This is an important principle of prayer.

 

Jesus just didn’t go out and do whatever he wanted.

 

This whole thing about works is very important. We, just like Jesus, must work in solidarity with what the Father is doing in this world. Every work that we do in the name of Jesus and every work that Jesus did in the name of his Father is empowered with the spirit’s power and presence.

 

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

 

John 14:12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

 

Jesus did not say these words to give us an incurable itch for miracles or for the supernatural to be seen in spectacular ways. But Jesus is encouraging us to pray and to use his name – when we use his name we are using his authority as if we were standing in for Jesus himself. When we use his name it’s like having the power of attorney – I am able on his behalf or someone’s behalf to make decisions or sign documents.

 

But the main thing in the Scripture is not greater works/miracles.

And the main thing is not getting what you want in Jesus’ name.

 

But the main thing that I want to focus in on this morning is verse 13 and 14.

John 14:13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

 

It is absolutely incredible that Jesus will step into our asking and get involved. “I will do it.”

But again, there’s this perimeter – “use my name so that I can bring glory to my Father.”

 

This is what I call a glory prayer. That we are praying a prayer that Jesus himself says, “I will answer so that I might glorify my Father.”

 

A Glory prayer is the kind of prayer that pleads with God to go public with his greatness. A prayer that asks God to show off. Many of our prayers are to bring glory to ourselves… But a glory prayer shines the light on the awesomeness of God.

 

A glory prayer means…

We are asking for an extension of his greatness to this world.

We are asking for an extension of his greatness to meet your personal needs.

We are asking for an extension of his greatness to permeate this church.

We are asking for an extension of his greatness to change things.

Orar – orar oraciones de gloria

Durante las próximas cuatro semanas vamos a tomar algún tiempo para ver la oración, especialmente en Juan 14, 15 y 16. En estos pasajes es casi como si Jesús estuviera arrojando las llaves de la oración a los discípulos y diciéndoles que usen el poder de su nombre para pedir que sucedan cosas.

 

Esta mañana hablamos de  la oración de gloria.

 

Juan 14:12 “De cierto, de cierto os digo que el que  cree en mí, también hará las obras que yo hago; y mayores obras que éstas hará, porque yo voy al Padre. 13 Todo lo que pidáis en mi nombre, esto haré, para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. 14 Si me pides algo en mi nombre, lo haré.

 

Leamos estos versículos en un contexto más amplio. Esto establecerá el contexto para aprender a orar oraciones de gloria.

 

Juan 14:10 ¿No creéis que yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre está en mí? Las palabras que os digo no las hablo por mi propia autoridad, sino que el Padre que mora en mí hace sus obras. 11 Créeme que yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre está en mí, o cree a causa de las obras mismas.

 

Este es un pasaje paralelo que sucedió después de una poderosa curación en la que cuestionan cómo lo hizo Jesús.

 

Juan 5:19 Entonces Jesús les dijo: “De cierto, de cierto os digo que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su propia voluntad, sino sólo lo que ve hacer al Padre. Porque todo lo que hace el Padre, que el Hijo haga lo mismo. 20 Porque el Padre ama al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que él mismo está haciendo. Y más grandes obras que éstas le mostrará, para que puedas maravillarte.

 

Ahora, hagamos un pequeño estudio bíblico sobre lo que Jesús está diciendo. Todos estos versículos de oración tienen un perímetro alrededor de ellos. En otras palabras, hay un límite cuando se usa el poder de la oración.

 

Note lo que Jesús está diciendo; Jesús y su Padre están trabajando juntos con un solo corazón, una mente y un propósito. Jesús y el Padre siempre están trabajando juntos, en tándem y todas sus obras se originaron con el Padre. Este es un principio importante de la oración.

 

Jesús simplemente no salió y hizo lo que quiso.

 

Todo esto de las obras es muy importante. Nosotros, al igual que Jesús, debemos trabajar en solidaridad con lo que el Padre está haciendo en este mundo. Cada obra que hacemos en el nombre de Jesús y cada obra que Jesús hizo en el nombre de su Padre está facultada con el poder y la presencia del espíritu.

 

Efesios 2:10 Porque somos hechura suya, creados en Cristo Jesús para buenas obras, las cuales Dios preparó de antemano, para que anduviéramos en ellas.

 

Juan 14:12 “De cierto, de cierto os digo que el que cree en mí, también hará las obras que yo hago; y mayores obras que éstas hará, porque yo voy al Padre. 13 Todo lo que pidáis en mi nombre, esto haré, para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. 14 Si me pides algo en mi nombre, lo haré.

 

Jesús no dijo estas palabras para darnos un anzuelo incurable por los milagros o para que lo sobrenatural sea visto de manera espectacular. Pero Jesús nos está animando a orar y a usar su nombre; cuando usamos su nombre, estamos usando su autoridad como si estuviéramos sustituyendo a Jesús mismo. Cuando usamos su nombre es como tener el poder notarial: soy capaz en su nombre o en el de alguien de tomar decisiones o firmar documentos.

 

Pero lo principal en las Escrituras no son obras / milagros mayores.

Y lo principal es no obtener lo que quieres en el nombre de Jesús.

 

Pero lo principal en lo que quiero enfocarme esta mañana es el versículo 13 y 14.

Juan 14:13 Todo lo que pidáis en mi nombre, esto haré, para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. 14 Si me pides algo en mi nombre, lo haré.

 

Es absolutamente increíble que Jesús intervenga en nuestra petición y se involucre. “Lo haré”.

Pero de nuevo, hay este perímetro: “usa mi nombre para que pueda glorificar a mi Padre”.

 

Esto es lo que yo llamo una oración de gloria. Que estamos orando una oración para que Jesús mismo diga: “Responderé para glorificar a mi Padre”.

 

Una oración de gloria es el tipo de oración que le suplica a Dios que haga pública su grandeza. Una oración que le pide a Dios que presuma. Muchas de nuestras oraciones son para glorificarnos a nosotros mismos… Pero una oración de gloria ilumina la maravilla de Dios.

 

Una oración de gloria significa…

Estamos pidiendo una extensión de su grandeza a este mundo.

Estamos pidiendo una extensión de su grandeza para satisfacer sus necesidades personales.

Estamos pidiendo una extensión de su grandeza para impregnar esta iglesia.

Estamos pidiendo una extensión de su grandeza para cambiar las cosas.

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
