Crash Helmet – Pride

Luke 18:9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

 

Notice in the parable that God is going to get involved in the life of the person who exalts himself. And it’s not going to be good. But God is also going to get involved in the one who humbles himself. And it’s going to be good!

 

Pride.

 

Pride is that thing inside of you that keeps you from and causes you to.

• Pride is the one thing that keeps you from celebrating other people’s success.
• It’s the one thing that keeps you from initiating an apology when you know that you’re wrong.
• It’s what causes you to always want to have the final word.
• It’s what causes you to buy things to impress people who aren’t even paying attention to you.

 

Pride is the first and original sin. Pride is what made the devil, the devil. The core of pride is the desire to lift up and exalt oneself and think, “I’m pretty special.”

Pride makes you bigger and God smaller.

Pride makes you bigger and other people smaller.

Pride puts you in the center of your universe and everyone else is somehow here for your convenience; to serve you.

 

We live in a world where pride has become a virtue. Pride will twist character flaws and sexual deviances and sins and turn them into rights that we flaunt and celebrate. Pride causes us to defend and celebrate our worst qualities.

 

Who will be a victim of your pride today? Will it be your family? Will it be God?

 

 

This parable that Jesus uses highlights all the ugliness of pride but all the beauty of humility. Put on your crash helmet.

1. Pride is evidenced by mocking or scorning.

2. Pride is evidenced by boasting.

3. Pride is evidenced by self deceit.

4. Pride is evidenced through defensiveness.

5. Pride is evidenced by defiance.

 

Pride is all about image management.

 

Why would we not go to an altar to pray when the Holy Spirit has moved upon us? Image management… Pride. Someone might get the wrong perception of us.

 

There’s a better way. It’s in the parable; humility.

 

Luke 18:13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

 

Jesus makes a powerful statement; exalt yourself and you will be humbled. Humble yourself and God will exalt you. Humility gets the attention and the presence and the power of God. Pride is the enemy of God.

 

James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God.

Jesus teaches us that humility lays down whatever rights we think we have for others.

Jesus is the example of humility because he leaves glory to come to the gutter of this planet and yet he didn’t lose any of his glory, his glory changes the gutter.

Jesus is the example of humility because he used his power not to make himself more exalted, but to use his power to save others.

 

When someone needs a good word, give it.

When someone needs a hug, give it.

When someone needs assurance, give it.

When someone needs a break, give it.

 

Jesus came to serve and seek lost people… Do that!

Jesus came and laid down his life – he wasn’t demanding other people lay down their lives – do that!

It’s the kindness of Jesus that led to repentance – do that!

 

Instead of standing over someone try kneeling with them.

Instead of making someone cry try understanding them.

Instead of withholding grace try pouring it out upon them.

Instead of folding your arms try extending your arms.

Instead of balling your hands into a fist try holding someone else’s hand.

Instead of slamming the door behind you try opening the door.

Instead of running away from everybody try running to them.

Instead of making people bleed try healing their wounds.

Instead of crushing them try lifting them.

Instead of vomiting out reckless words that gash and cut, try saying words that will completely and utterly defeat Satan at that moment.

Lucas 18:9 También contó esta parábola a algunos  que confiaban en sí mismos que eran justos, y trataban a otros con desprecio: 10 »Dos hombres subieron al templo a orar, uno fariseo  y el otro publicano. 11 El fariseo, de pie solo, oró así: “Dios, te doy gracias porque no soy como otros hombres, extorsionadores, injustos, adúlteros, o incluso como este publicano. 12 Ayuno dos veces por semana; Doy diezmos de todo lo que recibo”.

13 Pero el publicano, que estaba lejos, ni siquiera levantó los ojos al cielo, sino que se golpeó el pecho, diciendo: «¡Dios, sé misericordioso conmigo, pecador!» 14 Te digo, este hombre bajó a su casa justificado, antes que el otro. Porque todo el que se exalta a sí mismo será humillado, pero el que se humilla será exaltado”.

 

Note en la parábola que Dios se va a involucrar en la vida de la persona que se exalta a sí misma. Y no va a ser bueno. Pero Dios también se va a involucrar en el que se humilla. ¡Y va a ser bueno!

 

Orgullo.

 

El orgullo es esa cosa dentro de ti que te impide y te hace hacerlo.

• El orgullo es lo único que te impide celebrar el éxito de otras personas.
• Es lo único que te impide iniciar una disculpa cuando sabes que estás equivocado.
• Es lo que hace que siempre quieras tener la última palabra.
• Es lo que hace que compres cosas para impresionar a las personas que ni siquiera te están prestando atención.

 

El orgullo es el primer y original pecado. El orgullo es lo que hizo al diablo, al diablo. El núcleo del orgullo es el deseo de elevarse y exaltarse a sí mismo y pensar: “Soy muy especial”.

El orgullo te hace más grande y a Dios más pequeño.

El orgullo te hace más grande y otras personas más pequeñas.

El orgullo te pone en el centro de tu universo y todos los demás están de alguna manera aquí para tu conveniencia; para servirle.

 

Vivimos en un mundo donde el orgullo se ha convertido en una virtud. El orgullo torcerá los defectos de carácter y las desviaciones sexuales y los pecados y los convertirá en derechos que hacemos alarde y celebramos. El orgullo nos hace defender y celebrar nuestras peores cualidades.

 

¿Quién será víctima de tu orgullo hoy? ¿Será tu familia? ¿Será Dios?

 

 

Esta parábola que Jesús usa resalta toda la fealdad del orgullo, pero toda la belleza de la humildad. Ponte el casco.

1. El orgullo se evidencia por la burla o el desprecio.

2. El orgullo se evidencia en la jactancia.

3. El orgullo se evidencia en el autoengaño.

4. El orgullo se evidencia a través de la actitud defensiva.

5. El orgullo se evidencia por el desafío.

 

El orgullo tiene que ver con la gestión de imágenes.

 

¿Por qué no iríamos a un altar a orar cuando el Espíritu Santo se ha movido sobre nosotros? Gestión de imágenes… Orgullo. Alguien podría tener una percepción equivocada de nosotros.

 

Hay una mejor manera. Está en la parábola; humildad.

 

Lucas 18:13 Pero el publicano, que estaba lejos, ni siquiera levantó los ojos al cielo, sino que se golpeó el pecho, diciendo: “¡Dios, sé misericordioso conmigo, pecador!”  14 Te digo, este hombre bajó a su casa justificado, antes que el otro. Porque todo el que se exalta a sí mismo será humillado, pero el que se humilla será exaltado”.

 

Jesús hace una declaración poderosa; Exaltarte a ti mismo y serás humillado. Humíllate y Dios te exaltará. La humildad recibe la atención, la presencia y el poder de Dios. El orgullo es el enemigo de Dios.

 

Santiago 4:6 “Dios se opone a los orgullosos, pero da gracia a los humildes”. 7 Sométanse, pues, a Dios.

Jesús nos enseña que la humildad establece cualquier derecho que pensemos que tenemos para los demás.

Jesús es el ejemplo de humildad porque deja la gloria para venir a la cuneta de este planeta y, sin embargo, no perdió nada de su gloria, su gloria cambia la cuneta.

Jesús es el ejemplo de humildad porque usó su poder no para hacerse más exaltado, sino para usar su poder para salvar a otros.

 

Cuando alguien necesite una buena palabra, darla.

Cuando alguien necesite un abrazo, dáelo.

Cuando alguien necesite seguridad, déla.

Cuando alguien necesite un descanso, délo.

 

Jesús vino a servir y buscar a las personas perdidas… ¡Haz eso!

Jesús vino y dio su vida, no estaba exigiendo que otras personas dieran sus vidas, ¡haz eso!

Es la bondad de Jesús lo que llevó al arrepentimiento, ¡haz eso!

 

En lugar de pararse sobre alguien, intente arrodillarse con ellos.

En lugar de hacer llorar a alguien, intenta entenderlos.

En lugar de retener la gracia, trata de derramarla sobre ellos.

En lugar de cruzar los brazos, intenta extender los brazos.

En lugar de poner las manos en un puño, intente sostener la mano de otra persona.

En lugar de cerrar la puerta detrás de ti, intenta abrir la puerta.

En lugar de huir de todos, intenta correr hacia ellos.

En lugar de hacer sangrar a la gente, intente curar sus heridas.

En lugar de aplastarlos, intente levantarlos.

En lugar de vomitar palabras imprudentes que cortan y cortan, trate de decir palabras que derrotarán completa y completamente a Satanás en ese momento.

 

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
