Questions Jesus asked; What is your name?

 

Mark 5:1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

 

3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

 

What in the world is Jesus doing here?

 

Jesus is here – Because if grace can’t reach this man, it can’t reach anyone.

And because if heaven can’t defeat this hell, it can’t defeat any hell.

Because if love doesn’t prevail for him, it prevails for no one.

And if Jesus can’t win this battle, he can’t win any battles.

 

Mark 5:6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”

 

Immediately a wrestling match begins. It’s a messy situation. This man’s life is at stake.

 

And then Jesus asks the question.

Mark 5:9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

 

His name is Legion. A Legion is a military term. It is a group of soldiers that could number up to 5000. It seems that this man was hosting more than one demon in his body.

 

Mark 5:10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

 

Mark 5:14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

 

They were more comfortable with demons than with Jesus!

 

This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the gospel that sets free.

 

Jesus offers a different kind of freedom than the world. It’s the freedom that that demon possessed man received.

 

Romans 8:15  For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…

 

True freedom is being a child of God.

 

True freedom is that in Jesus Christ I have been accepted

I have been counted as righteous and standing right with God

that I am un-condemned

that I am unconditionally loved

that I am released from guilt and shame

and that now God is for me

and the Holy Spirit fills me

and Jesus intercedes for me.

 

When you live in the framework of the gospel you suddenly experience freedom…

 

Freedom from condemnation – that nagging voice that keeps telling you you’re not good enough.

 

Freedom to trust – because your heavenly father is actively working for your benefit.

 

Freedom to enjoy – that this really isn’t too good to be true.

 

Freedom from the pressure to make it on your own.

 

Freedom from the demand to measure up and to get it all right.

 

Freedom from the obligation to fix ourselves – to constantly be looking at where we aren’t making it so that we can work on it and leave that in the hands of God.

 

Freedom from the need to win all the time.

 

Freedom from the tireless efforts to validate ourselves and to get people to notice us so that we can feel important and like we count.

 

Freedom from always needing to impress other people and prove ourselves.

 

Freedom from the burden to try to control what others think about us, to maintain an image.

 

Freedom from having to get from you what I need – trying to make you give me what I need to feel better about myself.

 

Freedom from always looking at how I am doing and when that’s not enough, how you are doing for me.

 

Freedom is about living with a Father who will do more than you ask or think, loves you relentlessly, and never plans on abandoning you.

 

The free live, not as slaves in the house of God but as sons. 

 

Mark 5:9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

 

This is the question of the day. What is your name? What is the name of the thing that is tormenting you? That is stealing your freedom?

Name it.

 

What is your name?

Now call that thing by name and say…

In the name of Jesus I’m unseating your influence in my life.

In the name of Jesus I will no longer believe your lies.

In the name of Jesus I cast out the filth and the condemnation that comes with it.

In the name of Jesus I ask the Holy Spirit to take control of this stronghold and clean it out and remove it from my heart.

In the name of Jesus I will no longer be controlled by this enemy.

In the name of Jesus I call this what it is – my enemy.

In the name of Jesus on throwing off my shackles and chains.

In the name of Jesus I’m going to walk in freedom.

And in the name of Jesus when that old demon comes back wanting in, I’m going to stand up and fight and close the door.

 

Let’s see what God can do!

¿Qué demonios está haciendo Jesús aquí?

 

Jesús está aquí – Porque si la gracia no puede alcanzar a este hombre, no puede llegar a nadie.

Y porque si el cielo no puede derrotar este infierno, no puede derrotar ningún infierno.

Porque si el amor no prevalece para él, no prevalece para nadie.

Y si Jesús no puede ganar esta batalla, no puede ganar ninguna batalla.

 

Marcos 5:6 Y cuando vio a Jesús desde lejos, corrió y se postró delante de él. 7 Y clamando a gran voz, dijo: “¿Qué tienes que ver conmigo, Jesús, Hijo del Dios Altísimo? Te conjuro por Dios, no me atormentes”. 8 Porque él le estaba diciendo: «¡Sal del hombre, espíritu inmundo!»

 

Inmediatamente comienza un combate de lucha libre. Es una situación complicada. La vida de este hombre está en juego.

 

Y entonces Jesús hace la pregunta.

Marcos 5:9 Y Jesús le preguntó: “¿Cuál es tu nombre?” Él respondió: “Mi nombre es Legión, porque somos muchos”.

 

Su nombre es Legión. Una legión es un término militar. Es un grupo de soldados que podría sumar hasta 5000. Parece que este hombre albergaba más de un demonio en su cuerpo.

 

Marcos 5:10 Y le rogó fervientemente que no los enviara fuera del país. 11 Una gran manada de cerdos se alimentaba allí en la ladera, 12 y le rogaron, diciendo: «Envíanos a los cerdos; Entremos en ellos”. 13 Entonces les dio permiso. Y los espíritus inmundos salieron y entraron en los cerdos; Y la manada, que sumaba unos dos mil, se precipitó por la empinada orilla hacia el mar y se ahogó en el mar.

 

Marcos 5:14 Los pastores huyeron y lo contaron en la ciudad y en el campo. Y la gente vino a ver qué era lo que había sucedido. 15 Y vinieron a Jesús y vieron al hombre poseído por demonios, el que había tenido la legión, sentado allí, vestido y en su sano juicio, y tuvieron miedo. 16  Y los que lo habían visto les describieron lo que les había sucedido al hombre poseído por demonios y a los cerdos. 17 Y comenzaron a rogarle a Jesús que se fuera de su región. 18 Cuando subía a la barca, el hombre que había sido poseído por demonios le rogó que estuviera con él. 19 Y no se lo permitió, sino que le dijo: «Ve a casa con tus amigos y diles cuánto ha hecho el Señor por ti, y cómo ha tenido misericordia de ti». 20 Y se fue y comenzó a proclamar en la Decápolis cuánto había hecho Jesús por él, y todos se maravillaron.

 

¡Se sentían más cómodos con los demonios que con Jesús!

 

Este es el evangelio de Jesucristo. Este es el evangelio que libera.

 

Jesús ofrece un tipo diferente de libertad que el mundo. Es la libertad que recibió ese hombre poseído por el demonio.

 

Romanos 8:15 Porque no recibisteis el espíritu de esclavitud para volver a caer en el temor, sino que habéis recibido el Espíritu de adopción como hijos, por quienes clamamos: “¡Abba! ¡Padre!” 16 El Espíritu mismo da testimonio con nuestro espíritu de que somos hijos de Dios…

 

La verdadera libertad es ser un hijo de Dios.

 

La verdadera libertad es que en Jesucristo he sido aceptado

He sido contado como justo y de pie recto con Dios

que no estoy condenado

que soy amado incondicionalmente

que soy liberado de la culpa y la vergüenza

y que ahora Dios es para mí

y el Espíritu Santo me llena

y Jesús intercede por mí.

 

Cuando vives en el marco del evangelio, de repente experimentas la libertad…

 

Libertad de condenación: esa voz persistente que te sigue diciendo que no eres lo suficientemente bueno.

 

Libertad para confiar, porque tu Padre celestial está trabajando activamente para tu beneficio.

 

Libertad para disfrutar, que esto realmente no es demasiado bueno para ser verdad.

 

Libertad de la presión de hacerlo por tu cuenta.

 

Libertad de la demanda de estar a la altura y de hacerlo todo bien.

 

Libertad de la obligación de arreglarnos a nosotros mismos, de estar constantemente mirando dónde no lo estamos haciendo para que podamos trabajar en ello y dejar eso en las manos de Dios.

 

Libertad de la necesidad de ganar todo el tiempo.

 

Libertad de los esfuerzos incansables para validarnos a nosotros mismos y para que la gente nos note para que podamos sentirnos importantes y como contamos.

 

Libertad de tener siempre que impresionar a otras personas y probarnos a nosotros mismos.

 

Libertad de la carga de tratar de controlar lo que los demás piensan de nosotros, de mantener una imagen.

 

Libertad de tener que obtener de ti lo que necesito, tratando de hacer que me des lo que necesito para sentirme mejor conmigo mismo.

 

Libertad de mirar siempre cómo estoy y cuando eso no es suficiente, cómo lo estás haciendo por mí.

 

La libertad se trata de vivir con un Padre que hará más de lo que pides o piensas, te ama implacablemente y nunca planea abandonarte.

 

Los libres viven, no como esclavos en la casa de Dios, sino como hijos.

 

Marcos 5:9 Y Jesús le preguntó: “¿Cuál es tu nombre?” Él respondió: “Mi nombre es Legión, porque somos muchos”.

 

Esta es la pregunta del día. ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cuál es el nombre de la cosa que te atormenta? ¿Eso es robar tu libertad?

Nómbralo.

Ahora llama a esa cosa por su nombre y di …

En el nombre de Jesús estoy desbancando tu influencia en mi vida.

En el nombre de Jesús ya no creeré tus mentiras.

En el nombre de Jesús echo fuera la inmundicia y la condenación que viene con ella.

En el nombre de Jesús le pido al Espíritu Santo que tome el control de esta fortaleza y la limpie y la quite de mi corazón.

En el nombre de Jesús ya no seré controlado por este enemigo.

En el nombre de Jesús llamo a esto lo que es: mi enemigo.

En el nombre de Jesús al quitarme los grilletes y las cadenas.

En el nombre de Jesús voy a caminar en libertad.

Y en el nombre de Jesús, cuando ese viejo demonio regrese con ganas, me levantaré y lucharé y cerraré la puerta.

 

¡Veamos qué puede hacer Dios!
