Questions Jesus Asked. Who is the greater?

We started the series last week with the most important question; “Who do you say I am?” How you answer that question will determine the ultimate destiny of your life.

Mark 10:35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”

James and John were audacious to ask such a thing.

They understood the role of the Messiah as primarily to overthrow political enemies by riding in on a white horse with the sword, and the punishment of the nations that opposed the Jews, and the lifting up of the Jewish people above all others. And James and John wanted in on it. They were reserving their seats.

The other disciples heard what James and John were doing and it didn’t sit well with them.

Luke 22:24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

They were arguing about who was the greatest.

These disciples fell into the trap of what the world defines as greatness.

• Their definition of greatness was looking after themselves first.
• And looking down on others.
• And being the boss.
• And lording over others.
• And using others to get what you want.
• Being entitled to the good stuff.

Life is not about amassing power, it’s about using what you have for others.

Galatians 5:13  For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

And then Jesus does a very dramatic thing.

John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

He was going to hold nothing back.

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Just get the picture; Jesus is crawling around on the floor. Jesus is crawling around on the floor. He is showing the full extent of his love.

He showed them the full extent of his love by serving them.

John 13:12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Wash one another’s feet.

This will be the radical practice of people who follow me.

You will learn how to crawl on the ground.

What if Jesus means what he says here? What if he really means for us to…

Demean yourselves. Humble yourself.

Make yourselves little.

Put yourselves last.

Put other people ahead of yourself.

Become a waiter.

Become a slave where you don’t even own your own life anymore.

Put other people’s needs ahead of your own needs.

Be willing to get your hands dirty.

Stop ignoring people.

Stop turning away.

Stop trying to find a way to get out of the conversation.

Stop living merely for your own benefit.

Stop trying to align ourselves with power.

Stop demeaning the poor, the powerless, the vulnerable, the immigrants, the unemployed, the mentally ill, the uneducated, the excluded and the marginalized.

Let’s see what God can do!

Preguntas que Jesús hizo. ¿Quién es el mayor?

Comenzamos la serie la semana pasada con la pregunta más importante; “¿Quién dices que soy?” La forma en que respondas a esa pregunta determinará el destino final de tu vida.

Marcos 10:35 Y Santiago y Juan, los hijos de Zebedeo, se acercaron a él y le dijeron: “Maestro, queremos que hagas por nosotros todo lo que te pidamos”. 36 Y él les dijo: “¿Qué quieren que haga por ustedes?” 37 Y ellos le dijeron: «Concédenos sentarnos, uno a tu diestra y otro a tu izquierda, en tu gloria».

Santiago y Juan fueron audaces al preguntar tal cosa.

Entendieron el papel del Mesías como principalmente derrocar a los enemigos políticos montando en un caballo blanco con la espada, y el castigo de las naciones que se oponían a los judíos, y el levantamiento del pueblo judío por encima de todos los demás. Y Santiago y Juan querían participar. Estaban reservando sus asientos.

Los otros discípulos escucharon lo que Santiago y Juan estaban haciendo y no les sentó bien.

Lucas 22:24 También surgió una disputa entre ellos, en cuanto a cuál de ellos debía ser considerado como el más grande. 25 Y les dijo: «Los reyes de los gentiles ejercen señorío sobre ellos, y los  que tienen autoridad sobre ellos son llamados benefactores. 26 Pero no es así contigo.  Más bien, dejen que el más grande entre ustedes se convierta en el más joven, y el líder en uno que sirve. 27 Porque ¿quién es el mayor, el que se reclina a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No es el que se reclina en la mesa? Pero yo estoy entre vosotros como el que sirve.

Estaban discutiendo sobre quién era el más grande.

Estos discípulos cayeron en la trampa de lo que el mundo define como grandeza.

• Su definición de grandeza era cuidarse a sí mismos primero.
• Y menospreciar a los demás.
• Y ser el jefe.
• Y señoreando sobre los demás.
• Y usar a otros para obtener lo que quieres.
• Tener derecho a las cosas buenas.

La vida no se trata de acumular poder, se trata de usar lo que tienes para los demás.

Gálatas 5:13 Porque fuisteis llamados a la libertad, hermanos. Sólo que no uséis vuestra libertad como una oportunidad para la carne, sino que a través del amor sírvenos unos a otros.

Y entonces Jesús hace algo muy dramático.

Juan 13:1 Ahora, antes de la fiesta de la Pascua, cuando Jesús supo que había llegado su hora de partir de este mundo al Padre, habiendo amado a los suyos que estaban en el mundo, los amó hasta el fin.

No iba a retener nada.

3 Jesús, sabiendo que el Padre había entregado todas las cosas en sus manos, y que había venido de Dios y volvía a Dios,

4 se levantaron de la cena. Dejó a un lado sus prendas exteriores y, tomando una toalla, se la ató alrededor de la cintura. 5 Luego vertió agua en una palangana y comenzó a lavar los pies de los discípulos y a limpiarlos con la toalla que estaba envuelta alrededor de él.

Solo obtén la imagen; Jesús está arrastrándose por el suelo. Jesús está arrastrándose por el suelo. Él está mostrando todo el alcance de su amor.

Él les mostró todo el alcance de su amor sirviéndoles.

Juan 13:12 Cuando les lavó los pies, se puso sus vestiduras exteriores y volvió a ocupar su lugar, les dijo: “¿Comprendéis lo que os he hecho? 13 Me llamas Maestro y Señor, y tienes razón, porque así soy yo. 14 Si yo, vuestro Señor y Maestro, os he lavado los pies, vosotros también debéis lavaros los pies unos a otros.  15 Porque os he dado un ejemplo, para que también vosotros hagáis lo que yo os he hecho. 16 De cierto, de cierto os digo que un siervo no es mayor que su amo, ni un mensajero es mayor que el que lo envió.

Lávense los pies unos a otros.

Esta será la práctica radical de las personas que me siguen.

Aprenderás a gatear por el suelo.

Lucas 22:25 Y les dijo: “Los reyes de los gentiles ejercen señorío sobre ellos, y los que tienen autoridad sobre ellos son llamados benefactores. 26 Pero no es así contigo.

¿Qué pasa si Jesús quiere decir lo que dice aquí?  ¿Qué pasa si realmente quiere que nosotros …

Degradaos a vosotros mismos. Humíllate.

Hazte pequeño.

Poned en último lugar.

Pon a otras personas por delante de ti.

Conviértete en camarero.

Conviértete en un esclavo donde ya ni siquiera eres dueño de tu propia vida.

Pon las necesidades de otras personas por delante de tus propias necesidades.

Esté dispuesto a ensuciarse las manos.

Deja de ignorar a la gente.

Deja de dar la vuelta.

Deja de tratar de encontrar una manera de salir de la conversación.

Deja de vivir simplemente para tu propio beneficio.

Dejar de tratar de alinearnos con el poder.

Dejen de degradar a los pobres, los impotentes, los vulnerables, los inmigrantes, los desempleados, los enfermos mentales, los sin educación, los excluidos y los marginados.

¡Veamos qué puede hacer Dios!
