Dear John 1 – Pergamum – A compromising church – Revelation 2

We are in a series of talks called “7 letters.” These letters are found in revelation 2-3. They are letters written by the apostle John but they come from Jesus himself. When these letters were delivered to 7 churches and contained information to encourage them but it also contained instructions on things that needed to get better.

Today we read the 3rd letter to a church about 55 miles from Smyrna called Pergamos.

Revelation 2:12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

The sword = God’s word; This is weapon for defense, protection or destruction.

Eph. 6:17…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God…

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword…

Revelation 2:12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

13 “‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

This church is living in Hells headquarters.

Satan decided that since he couldn’t beat them, he would join them.

Revelation 2:14  (NLT) “But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin. 15 In a similar way, you have some Nicolaitans among you who follow the same teaching. 16 Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

This is the sin of compromise.

2 Cor. 6:16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

“I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,
    and I will be their God,
    and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore go out from their midst,
    and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
    then I will welcome you,
18 and I will be a father to you,
    and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”

Have you ever taken seriously that you/we are the temple of God and that the temple of God needs to be kept sacred and holy?

This church in Pergamom had let down its guard. It wasn’t much of a temple anymore.

And Jesus tells this church Revelation 2:16 Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Compromise, tolerating lies masqueraded as the truth, being complacent and not correcting error – he calls it a sin.

It’s difficult to call out, it’s not popular, it offends people, but it’s necessary.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

You see, this is precisely what the enemy is after – Your identity – your calling.

• To steal your chosenness.
• To take away your royalty.
• To destroy your priesthood.
• To nullify the message.
• To shut off the light.

Jesus finishes his message to this church like this;

Revelation 2:17 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.

Querido Juan 1 – Pérgamo – Una iglesia comprometedora – Apocalipsis 2

Estamos en una serie de charlas llamadas “7 cartas”. Estas cartas se encuentran en Apocalipsis 2-3. Son cartas escritas por el apóstol Juan, pero provienen del mismo Jesús. Cuando estas cartas fueron entregadas a 7 iglesias y contenían información para alentarlas, pero también contenían instrucciones sobre cosas que necesitaban mejorar.

Hoy leemos la 3ª carta a una iglesia a unas 55 millas de Esmirna llamada Pérgamo.

Apocalipsis 2:12 “Y al ángel de la iglesia en Pérgamo escribe: ‘Las palabras del que tiene la espada afilada de dos filos.

La espada = la palabra de Dios; Esta es un arma para la defensa, la protección o la destrucción.

Efesios 6:17… y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios…

Hebreos 4:12 Porque la palabra de Dios es viva y activa, más afilada que cualquier espada de dos filos…

Apocalipsis 2:12 “Y al ángel de la iglesia en Pérgamo escribe: ‘Las palabras del que tiene la espada afilada de dos filos.

13 »’Yo sé dónde moras, dónde está el trono de Satanás. Sin embargo, ustedes se aferran a mi nombre, y no negaron mi fe incluso en los días de Antipas, mi fiel testigo, que fue asesinado entre ustedes, donde mora Satanás.

Esta iglesia vive en la sede de Hells.

Satanás decidió que, como no podía vencerlos, se uniría a ellos.

Apocalipsis 2:14  (NTV) “Pero tengo algunas quejas contra ti. Ustedes toleran a algunos de ustedes cuya enseñanza es como la de Balaam, quien le mostró a Balac cómo hacer tropezar al pueblo de Israel. Él les enseñó a pecar comiendo alimentos ofrecidos a los ídolos y cometiendo pecado sexual. 15 De manera similar, hay algunos nicolaítas entre ustedes que siguen la misma enseñanza. 16 Arrepiéntete de tu pecado, o vendré a ti de repente y lucharé contra ellos con la espada de mi boca.

Este es el pecado del compromiso.

2 Corintios 6:16 ¿Qué acuerdo tiene el templo de Dios con los ídolos? Porque somos el templo del Dios viviente; como Dios dijo,

“Haré mi morada entre ellos y caminaré entre ellos, y
seré su Dios,    
    y ellos serán mi pueblo.
17 Por tanto, sal de en medio
de ellos, y aléjate de ellos, dice el Señor,    
y no toques nada inmundo;
    entonces os daré la bienvenida18
 , y seré padre para vosotros
, y seréis hijos e hijas para mí,    
dice el Señor Todopoderoso”.

¿Alguna vez has tomado en serio que tú / nosotros somos el templo de Dios y que el templo de Dios necesita ser mantenido sagrado y santo?

Esta iglesia en Pérgamo había bajado la guardia. Ya no era un templo.

Y Jesús le dice a esta iglesia Apocalipsis 2:16 Arrepiéntete de tu pecado, o vendré a ti de repente y lucharé contra ellos con la espada de mi boca.

Compromiso, tolerar mentiras disfrazadas de verdad, ser complaciente y no corregir el error, lo llama pecado.

Es difícil de llamar, no es popular, ofende a la gente, pero es necesario.

1 Pedro 2:9 Pero vosotros sois una raza escogida, un sacerdocio real, una nación santa, un pueblo para su propia posesión, para que proclaméis las excelencias de aquel que os llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable. 10 Una vez no fuisteis un pueblo, pero ahora sois pueblo de Dios; una vez no habéis recibido misericordia, pero ahora habéis recibido misericordia.

11 Amados, os exhorto, como extranjeros y exiliados, a absteneros de las pasiones de la carne, que hacen la guerra contra vuestra alma.

Verás, esto es precisamente lo que el enemigo está buscando: Tu identidad, tu vocación.

• Para robar tu elección.
• Para quitarte la realeza.
• Para destruir su sacerdocio.
• Para anular el mensaje.
• Para apagar la luz.

Jesús termina su mensaje a esta iglesia así;

Apocalipsis 2:17 »Cualquiera que tenga oídos para oír debe escuchar al Espíritu y entender lo que está diciendo a las iglesias. A todos los que salgan victoriosos les daré algo del maná que ha sido escondido en el cielo. Y daré a cada uno una piedra blanca, y en la piedra se grabará un nuevo nombre que nadie entiende excepto el que lo recibe.

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
