Walk to the Mess

Personal Failure.  Peter and Forgiveness.

Let’s take a walk to the mess of personal failure. Disappointment in ourselves. Let’s bravely and resolutely walk to the sin that we have committed and let’s deal with it. 

On the last night before the crucifixion, Jesus gathered all of his disciples together for what we call the Last Supper. Jesus reveals that all the disciples will fall away. This is the moment that Peter declares.  

                Mark 14:29-31 Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”  And  Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same. 

Luke 22:54-62 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. 

This is an epic failure. 

He is a betrayer. 

He is a weakling. 

He is a traitor. 

This is certainly me and you at times. 

What kind of Jesus will you find in the mess of your personal failure? The Bible has an answer… 

Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul. 

Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 

Hebrews 5:2  He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward… 

The Jesus who is awaiting you is… 

• A restorer
• a sympathizer
• one who has been tempted in the same way
• gracious
• rich in mercy
• ready to help
• gentle
• inviting
• and a way maker.

Romans 5:20-21 But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 

He meets abundant sin with overwhelming grace. 

Let’s get back to Peter. What happens when Peter finally has to face Jesus? 

If you know the story, after Peter’s denial Jesus is hung on a cross and dies. But three days later he is alive again! And on that day Jesus appears to the disciples. 

Eight days later he appears again. 

But Peter is still living under the condemnation of what he had done. 

John 21:15-19 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”  He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”  He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.”  (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” 

By the way, have you ever thought about what God does with your sin? Here are a few things that you can find in the Bible about that… 

1. He tramples them underfoot.

Micah 7:19 Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! 

2. He throws them into the sea.

3. He blots them out.

Isaiah 43:25 “I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again. 

4. He forgets your sin.

Hebrews 8:12 And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” 

5. He removes your sin.

Psalm 103:12 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. 

6. He takes away your sin.

John 1:29 “behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” 

7. He cancels the debt of your sin.

Colossians 2:14  He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 

8. He washes your sin. Isaiah 1:18
9. He forgives your sin. 1 John 1:9

Let’s see what GOD can do!

Camina hasta el lío

Fracaso personal.  Pedro y el perdón.

Demos un paseo hacia el lío del fracaso personal. Decepción en nosotros mismos. Caminemos valiente y resueltamente hacia el pecado que hemos cometido y lidiemos con él.

En la última noche antes de la crucifixión, Jesús reunió a todos sus discípulos para lo que llamamos la Última Cena. Jesús revela que todos los discípulos caerán. Este es el momento que Pedro declara.

Marcos 14:29-31 Pedro le dijo: “Aunque todos se caigan, yo no lo haré”.  Y Jesús le dijo: “En verdad, te digo, esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, me negarás tres veces”. Pero dijo enfáticamente: “Si debo morir contigo, no te negaré”. Y todos dijeron lo mismo.

Lucas 22:54-62 Entonces lo agarraron y se lo llevaron, llevándolo a la casa del sumo sacerdote, y Pedro lo estaba siguiendo a distancia. Y cuando encendieron un fuego en medio del patio y se sentaron juntos, Pedro se sentó entre ellos. Entonces una sirvienta, al verlo mientras se sentaba en la luz y mirándolo de cerca, dijo: “Este hombre también estaba con él”. Pero él lo negó, diciendo: “Mujer, no lo conozco”. Y un poco más tarde alguien más lo vio y dijo: “Tú también eres uno de ellos”. Pero Pedro dijo: “Hombre, no lo soy”. Y después de un intervalo de aproximadamente una hora, otro insistió, diciendo: “Ciertamente este hombre también estaba con él, porque él también es un galileo”. Pero Pedro dijo: “Hombre, no sé de qué estás hablando”. E inmediatamente, mientras todavía estaba hablando, el gallo cantó. Y el Señor se volvió y miró a Pedro. Y Pedro recordó el dicho del Señor, cómo le había dicho: “Antes de que el gallo cante hoy, me negarás tres veces”. Y salió y lloró amargamente.

Este es un fracaso épico.

Es un traidor.

Es un débil.

Es un traidor.

Este somos ciertamente yo y tú a veces.

¿Qué clase de Jesús encontrarás en el lío de tu fracaso personal? La Biblia tiene una respuesta…

Hebreos 4:15-16 Porque no tenemos un sumo sacerdote que sea incapaz de simpatizar con nuestras debilidades, sino uno que en todos los aspectos ha sido tentado como nosotros, pero sin pecado. Acerquémonos entonces con confianza al trono de la gracia, para que podamos recibir misericordia y encontrar gracia para ayudar en tiempos de necesidad.

Hebreos 5:2 Él puede tratar suavemente con los ignorantes y descarriados…

El Jesús que te espera es…

• Un restaurador
• un simpatizante
• uno que ha sido tentado de la misma manera
• cortés
• rico en misericordia
• listo para ayudar
• Amable
• tentador
• y un creador de caminos.

Romanos 5:20-21 Pero a medida que la gente pecaba más y más, la maravillosa gracia de Dios se hizo más abundante. Así como el pecado gobernó sobre todas las personas y las llevó a la muerte, ahora la maravillosa gracia de Dios gobierna en su lugar, dándonos una posición correcta con Dios y resultando en la vida eterna a través de Jesucristo nuestro Señor.

Él se encuentra con el pecado abundante con una gracia abrumadora.

Volvamos a Pedro. ¿Qué sucede cuando Pedro finalmente tiene que enfrentarse a Jesús?

Si conoces la historia, después de la negación de Pedro, Jesús es colgado de una cruz y muere. ¡Pero tres días después está vivo de nuevo! Y en ese día Jesús se aparece a los discípulos.

Ocho días después vuelve a aparecer.

Pero Pedro todavía vive bajo la condenación de lo que había hecho.

Juan 21:15-19 Cuando terminaron de desayunar, Jesús le dijo a Simón Pedro: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que a estos?” Él le dijo: “Sí, Señor; sabes que te amo”. Le dijo: “Apacienta a mis corderos”.  Le dijo por segunda vez: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” Él le dijo: “Sí, Señor; sabes que te amo”. Él le dijo: “Cuida mis ovejas”.  Le dijo por tercera vez: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” Pedro se afligió porque le dijo la tercera vez: “¿Me amas?” y le dijo: “Señor, tú lo sabes todo; sabes que te amo”. Jesús le dijo: “Apacienta mis ovejas. Verdaderamente, verdaderamente, te digo, cuando eras joven, solías vestirte y caminar donde quisieras, pero cuando seas viejo, estirarás las manos, y otro te vestirá y te llevará a donde no quieres ir”.  (Esto dijo para mostrar con qué tipo de muerte era para glorificar a Dios).) Y después de decir esto, le dijo: “Sígueme”.

Por cierto, ¿alguna vez has pensado en lo que Dios hace con tu pecado? Aquí hay algunas cosas que puedes encontrar en la Biblia acerca de eso…

1. Los pisotea bajo los pies.

Miqueas 7:19 Una vez más tendrás compasión de nosotros. ¡Pisotearás nuestros pecados bajo tus pies y los arrojarás a las profundidades del océano!

2.  Los arroja al mar.

3.  Los borra.

Isaías 43:25 “Yo, sí, solo yo, borraré tus pecados por mi propio bien y nunca volveré a pensar en ellos.

4.  Él olvida tu pecado.

Hebreos 8:12 Y perdonaré su maldad, y nunca más recordaré sus pecados.”

5.  Él quita tu pecado.

Salmo 103:12 Él ha quitado nuestros pecados tan lejos de nosotros como el este está del oeste.

6.  Él quita tu pecado.

Juan 1:29 “¡He aquí, el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo!”

7.  Él cancela la deuda de tu pecado.

Colosenses 2:14 Él canceló el registro de los cargos contra nosotros y se lo quitó clavándolo en la cruz.

8.  Él lava tu pecado. Isaías 1:18

9.  Él perdona tu pecado. 1 Juan 1:9

¡Veamos qué puede hacer DIOS!
