Do Not Covet

March 23, 2025

Exodus 20:17

The two Hebrew words used to define the prohibition are, “Lo Chamad.”

Lo – Extreme prohibition

Chamad – desire, set your eyes upon, covet

The positive principle behind this commandment is illustrated well in the message of Mark 10:17-22.

Calling through tests and challenges was common amongst the early disciples.

Peter, James, John, and Andrew all left their nets to follow Jesus.

Jesus challenged the “checklist” view of the ten commandments in his advice to the young man.

Read Luke 8:5-8

The parable should lead us to ask ourselves the question of, “What kind of soil do I want to be?”

Read Luke 8:11-15

The types of soil represent the ways in which we allow/reject the word and work of God into our hearts. The question asked by Jesus exposed the hardness of the young man’s heart.

Read Mark 10:21-22

The man went away sad because of the condition of his heart.

Read Deuteronomy 4:23-24

As we reflect on the impact of the 10 Commandments, let us keep this message in mind.
