Exodus 20:12

Adding Honor

The Hebrew word for honor in this command is that of Kaved  (כָּבֵד)

This word is used to describe the action of adding weight to something.

Example: Genesis 9:20-23

  • The situation – Noah’s first drinks after the flood, did not go well.
  • The first son – Laughed at his father’s embarrassment
  • The other sons – Covered their father’s shame – added honor.

Question: How can we show honor to the dishonorable?

Answer: The Golden Rule – Matthew 7:12

  • The recipient does not need to be worthy, we have to be willing.

Application: Ephesians 6:1-4

  • The Fourth Commandment is still in effect for the Christian today.
  • The Parents (especially the Fathers) must lead the way by showing their children honor first.

Closing: Galatians 6:10

  • The world will look at how we treat one another first.
