Matthew 6:1-18

This is week two of studying from – The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). The sermon is the longest recorded sermon by Jesus. It is believed to capture the main principles of Christian discipleship.

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches about three specific actions and how they relate to Christian discipleship. Jesus lays down a basic premise in Matthew 6:1. The motivation behind each of the actions is emphasized. This verse is actually an introduction to all three practices: giving, praying, and fasting.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” (6:1)
