Characteristics of a Disciple of Jesus

July 30, 2023

Matthew 5:1-12

Today we look at what is known as The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). The sermon is the longest recorded sermon by Jesus. It is believed to capture the main principles of Christian Discipleship. It includes the Beatitudes
(the blessings) in chapter 5.

The Beatitudes describe a way of life that is the life of a true disciple. The word “blessed” used in 5:3-11 translates a Greek word (makarios) which can be rendered “fortunate” or even “happy.” Here are attitudes that ought to be in our lives today. Each beatitude is a sermon in itself.

Note the following:

Our attitude toward ourselves (Matthew 5:3)

Our attitude toward our sins (Matthew 5:4-6)

Our attitude toward the Lord (Matthew 5:7-9)

Our attitude toward the world (Matthew 5:10-12)
