The Feeding of the 5,000

May 7, 2023

Luke 9:12-17

Today we read a familiar story. It’s interesting that all four of the gospels tell about the feeding of the 5,000
(Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:12-17; John 6:5-14). In fact, this is the only miracle other than the resurrection that is recorded in all four gospels.

A little boy didn’t have much but what he had he gave to Jesus. Miraculously, Jesus used five loaves of bread and two small fish to feed thousands of people. This was an unforgettable day. Jesus not only met a physical need, but he also pointed to the fact that he was the “bread of life” (John 6:35).

Note the following:

This miracle teaches us about the heart of Jesus.

This miracle teaches us about the strategy of Jesus.

This miracle teaches us about the power of Jesus.
