2 Timothy 4:4-7

The context of 2 Timothy 4:4-7 finds the apostle Paul nearing the end of his second, final imprisonment at Rome (he was imprisoned because of his faith in Jesus). He knows that his time on earth is short. Some have identified this passage as Paul’s “swan song” or his last testament.

Paul the apostle uses five specific images to describe life. Each of these images is helpful to understanding the Christian worldview.

When you’re young it seems like you have all the time in the world. It doesn’t take many years until you come to realize that life moves pretty fast. Life is a precious gift. Regardless of how many years we live, we live best when we find pleasure in loving and serving God.

Note the following:

Life is an altar.

Life is a pilgrimage.

Life is a battle.

Life is a race.

Life is a trust.
