Teach Us To Pray – Part 1

July 31, 2022

Luke 11:1-13

Why Pray? (v. 1)

See also: Luke 4:21, 5:18, 6:12, 9:18, 28

Jesus (v. 2-4)

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. . . (Romans 8:15-17)

Jesus has a plan (v. 5-9)

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16)

Jesus gives us (v. 10-13)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Head

  • How would you respond if someone asked you, “how do I pray?”.
  • Ask someone “how do you pray”? Note their response.
  • When it comes to your prayer life, how do you approach God with the boldness Jesus describes in verses 5-9, or not?
  • What do you think Jesus means when he says that He will give the gift of His Holy Spirit to those who ask in verse 13?

Heart

  • What do you think makes you more or less bold in your praying?
  • How do you feel about praying when you re-read verses 9-10 and then again verses 11-13?
  • If Jesus were speaking these words directly to you (which we believe He is), what is He saying about your praying, today?

Hands

  • If Jesus were speaking these words directly to you (which we believe He is), how will you respond this week?
