CISTERNS

Jeremiah 2:1-13

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1–3)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Jeremiah 2:1-13

Our text discusses two sins at the heart of all the brokenness the people of Judah are experiencing. Today, we’re examining how we experience these sins in our lives and the way we can choose forward together. We pray that the Spirit leads and guides us in love.

Our Forgotten and Rejected Living Lord

  • The First Commandment is “You shall have no other gods.” What does this mean? Why is this so challenging for people?
  • What are some ways that you forget and reject God?

Our Broken Cisterns

A cistern is a private reservoir that would collect rainwater and sustain the family through the dry seasons. This biblical image is a metaphor for the philosophies, beliefs, or ways that we look to for hope rather than the Lord.

  • What are the cisterns in your life?
  • In what ways does God generously provide me with all that I need for my daily life and my eternal salvation?

The Way Forward Together

  • Read Micah 6:8. The sermon listed 4 biblical ways forward together: 1) Humbly pray, seek the Lord, and turn from our evil ways; 2) Live life and care for our community; 3) In humility, look to the interests of others; 4) Lament.
  • As a group, discuss how each of these have been (and could be) life-giving to us as the church, the family of God?
