LOVING WITH LOYALTY
John 13:34–35 (NKJV):
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?
- Love Within The Church Should Be Our Witness To The World
- Loving Like Jesus Means Serving People Who Are Hard To Love
EMPOWERED BY THE ENCOURAGER
John 14:26–27 (NKJV):
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
APPLICATION TO-DO LIST:
- Identify Ways You Can Actively Love Others As Jesus Commanded
- Commit To Abiding In Christ Daily Through Prayer And Scripture
- Reflect on the Holy Spirit’s Guidance And Seek His Wisdom In Your Daily Life
- Encourage Someone With The Peace And Assurance Jesus Provides
ABIDING IN THE ALMIGHTY
John 15:5 (NKJV):
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
ABIDING IN JESUS MEANS STAYING CONNECTED TO HIM THROUGH:
- Daily Prayer
- Reading And Obeying Scripture
- Trusting His Guidance
- Walking In Obedience To His Word
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BEAR FRUIT?
To “bear fruit” means that something productive and God-honoring comes from your life. This could look like:
- Developing Christlike Character Galatians 5:22 (Love, Patience, Kindness, etc.)
- Influencing Others Through Your Faith (5:16)
- Serving Others In Love (Romans 12:9-13)
- Growing In Maturity As A Disciple (1 Corinthians 13:11
IN EVERYDAY LIFE, ABIDING MEANS:
- Starting Your Day With God, Not Just Out Of Habit, But Out Of Hunger
- Checking Your Responses And Decisions Against God’s Word
- Trusting God When Life Is Uncertain, Rather Than Trying To Control Everything
- Staying Spiritually Plugged In Through Regular Worship, Study, And Community
- Refusing To Let Distractions Pull You Away From God’s Voice
STANDING STRONG THROUGH SUFFERING
John 16:33 (NKJV)
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Jesus never promised His followers a life free from pain, disappointment, or opposition. Instead, He promised His presence in the middle of every struggle. The Christian life is not the absence of trouble—it is the assurance of victory because Christ has already overcome.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?
1. Trouble Is Inevitable, But Defeat Is Optional.
Every believer will experience hardships, setbacks, disappointments, sickness, rejection, and spiritual attacks. Difficult seasons are not evidence that God has abandoned you; often they are evidence that He is growing you.
Remember: Your circumstances do not determine God’s faithfulness.
2. Our Peace Is Found In Jesus, Not Our Circumstances.
The world says peace comes when everything goes your way.
Jesus says peace comes when you stay connected to Him regardless of what is happening around you.
True peace is internal, not external.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us that God’s peace guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
3. The Holy Spirit Gives Us Strength To Endure.
Earlier in John 16 Jesus promised the coming of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit…
- Gives wisdom when we’re confused.
- Gives comfort when we’re hurting.
- Gives courage when we’re afraid.
- Gives conviction when we’re drifting.
- Gives power when we’re weak.
We never fight life’s battles alone.
4. Victory Is Already Decided.
Jesus didn’t say,
“You might overcome.”
He said,
“I have overcome the world.”
Because Christ won the victory, believers fight from victory—not for victory.
Our confidence rests in what Jesus has already accomplished.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
How Do We Stand Strong During Difficult Seasons?
• Choose Faith Over Fear
Refuse to allow fear to become louder than God’s promises.
• Guard Your Thoughts
Don’t let negative thoughts become permanent beliefs.
Fill your mind with Scripture instead of anxiety.
Romans 12:2
Philippians 4:8
• Stay Connected To The Body Of Christ
Isolation makes believers vulnerable.
Stay committed to worship, Bible study, accountability, and Christian fellowship.
• Keep Serving Even While You’re Struggling
Sometimes healing comes while serving others.
God often strengthens us while we’re strengthening someone else.
• Pray Before You Panic
Instead of reacting emotionally…
Respond spiritually.
Prayer should be your first response—not your last resort.
APPLICATION TO-DO LIST
□ Identify one current struggle where you need God’s peace.
□ Memorize John 16:33 this week.
□ Replace one negative thought each day with a promise from Scripture.
□ Spend ten uninterrupted minutes praying before making major decisions.
□ Encourage someone else who may be going through a difficult season.
□ Thank God daily for victories you have not yet seen.
JESUS’ PRAYER FOR US
John 17:20-23 (NKJV)
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word…”
John 17 is often called The High Priestly Prayer because Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and every future believer—including us.
This chapter reveals the heart of Jesus before going to the cross.
JESUS PRAYED FOR OUR PROTECTION
(vv.11-15)
Jesus did not ask God to remove believers from the world.
He asked the Father to keep them while they lived in it.
God’s goal is not escape…
His goal is endurance.
JESUS PRAYED FOR OUR SANCTIFICATION
(vv.17-19)
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
God changes us through His Word.
Every time we obey Scripture…
We become more like Christ.
Transformation happens one act of obedience at a time.
JESUS PRAYED FOR OUR MISSION
(v.18)
“As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them…”
Every believer has been commissioned.
We are not merely church attendees.
We are Kingdom ambassadors.
Our lives should point others toward Christ.
JESUS PRAYED FOR OUR UNITY
(vv.20-23)
Jesus knew that unity would become one of the greatest witnesses to the world.
The Church does not have to agree on everything, but we must remain united around Christ.
Unity magnifies Jesus.
Division distracts from Jesus.
JESUS PRAYED THAT WE WOULD EXPERIENCE HIS GLORY
(v.24)
Jesus desires that His followers would experience eternal fellowship with Him.
Our greatest reward is not heaven itself…
Our greatest reward is being with Jesus forever.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Live Like Someone Jesus Prayed For
Every decision should reflect the fact that Christ personally interceded for His followers.
Protect The Unity Of The Church
Choose forgiveness over offense.
Choose restoration over division.
Choose humility over pride.
Stay In God’s Word Daily
Transformation requires continual exposure to God’s truth.
Represent Christ Wherever You Go
Your family…
Your workplace…
Your neighborhood…
Your school…
Your community…
These are all mission fields.
Pursue Holiness Daily
God is not calling us to perfection overnight.
He is calling us to consistent growth.
CLOSING ENCOURAGEMENT
As we conclude John 13–17, we discover that discipleship is more than learning information—it is experiencing transformation.
In Chapter 13, Jesus taught us that true greatness is found in humble service and sacrificial love.
In Chapter 14, He reminded us that we are never alone because the Holy Spirit is our Helper, Teacher, and Comforter.
In Chapter 15, Jesus showed us that lasting fruit only comes by abiding in Him.
In Chapter 16, He prepared us to face life’s trials with courage because He has already overcome the world.
Finally, in Chapter 17, Jesus revealed His heart through prayer, reminding us that before He went to the cross, He prayed for His disciples—and He prayed for us.
The message of these chapters is clear:
- Love one another.
- Depend on the Holy Spirit.
- Abide in Christ.
- Stand firm through every trial.
- Live united as God’s people.
- Fulfill the mission Christ has given you.
The Christian life is not about simply knowing Jesus—it is about becoming more like Him every day.
FINAL CHALLENGE
As you continue your journey with the Gospel of John, ask yourself:
- Am I loving like Jesus?
- Am I depending on the Holy Spirit?
- Am I abiding in Christ daily?
- Am I standing firm when trials come?
- Am I living in unity with other believers?
- Am I fulfilling the mission God has given me?
If we faithfully walk in these truths, we will not merely be hearers of the Word—we will become mature disciples who reflect Christ to a world that desperately needs Him.
