THE CALL TO COMPASSIONATE DISCIPLESHIP
1. Love Beyond Limits: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” 27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” 29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” 37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Life Application
Jesus teaches that compassion is not based on comfort, culture, race, status, or convenience. The Samaritan crossed social barriers to help someone in pain. As believers, we are called to move beyond selective love and demonstrate the heart of Christ through action. Compassion is more than feeling sorry for someone—it is responding with mercy, kindness, and sacrifice.
Many people today are emotionally wounded, spiritually broken, and silently struggling. God calls us not to pass by people in pain, but to pause long enough to become part of their healing process.

Mind Mastery
Compassion begins with a transformed mindset. A hardened heart will always find excuses, but a Christ-centered mind looks for opportunities to help. We must challenge thoughts of prejudice, indifference, selfishness, and emotional detachment.

“People are not interruptions to my assignment; they are often the assignment.”

2. WELCOMING THE MARGINALIZED: THE GREAT BANQUET (LUKE 14:15-24)

So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’
• In Jewish culture, banquets were symbols of honor and blessing.

Life Application
The Kingdom of God is open to those the world often rejects or overlooks. Jesus reminds us that the Gospel invitation is not reserved for the elite, the popular, the wealthy, or the religiously polished. God intentionally seeks the broken, forgotten, hurting, and overlooked.
Churches and believers must guard against becoming so consumed with programs, traditions, preferences, and appearances that we neglect people who desperately need God’s love. Compassionate discipleship creates room at the table for everyone.
Mind Mastery
A Kingdom mindset refuses to measure people by status, appearance, education, past mistakes, or social acceptance. Jesus saw value where others saw inconvenience. We must renew our minds to see people through the lens of grace instead of judgment.
Mindset Shift:
“If God made room for me, I must make room for others.”

3. REJOICING IN RESTORATION: THE LOST PARABLES (LUKE 15:1-32)
Luke 15:6 NKJV
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
LUKE 15 CONTAINS THREE PARABLES OF RESTORATION:
- The Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7 NKJV) – A shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
A CALL TO SPIRITUAL AWARENESS AND GENUINE CELEBRATION
Luke 15:7 NKJV
I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.
When we witness someone beginning their journey with Christ, we are entrusted with two key responsibilities:
1. KNOW THERE WILL BE SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Life Application
Whenever someone moves closer to God, spiritual opposition often increases. The enemy fights hardest for what he is about to lose. New believers, restored believers, and growing believers need encouragement, discipleship, accountability, and prayer support.
As mature believers, we must help protect and strengthen those who are returning to God instead of criticizing their process.
Mind Mastery
Do not allow cynicism, jealousy, or spiritual pride to blind you to the miracle of transformation. The enemy wants believers to become critical instead of compassionate.
Mindset Shift:
“Restoration is not weakness; it is evidence of God’s grace at work.”

2. WE MUST HAVE GENUINE REJOICING
Luke 15:10 NKJV
Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Challenge: How can we celebrate sincerely when others experience redemption?

Life Application
True spiritual maturity celebrates the success, healing, deliverance, and restoration of others. The father of the prodigal son rejoiced when his son returned home, but the older brother struggled with resentment. We must be careful not to become so religious that we lose our ability to celebrate redemption.
When God restores people, our response should be gratitude, joy, encouragement, and love—not comparison or criticism.
Mind Mastery
A healthy spiritual mindset rejoices in restoration rather than competing with it. Comparison creates insecurity, but compassion creates celebration.
Mindset Shift:
“Someone else’s restoration does not diminish my value or my relationship with God.”

LIVING COMPASSIONATELY LIKE CHRIST
Jesus’ teachings in Luke 10–15 challenge us to embrace compassion without limits. We are called to:
- Love beyond barriers – Seeing everyone as our neighbor.

Choose compassion over convenience. Look for practical ways to help people emotionally, spiritually, financially, or relationally.
