A Perfect Gift Pt.3: Our Everlasting Father

The Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6

What does it mean to say that Jesus is our Everlasting Father?

How is Jesus like a Father to us?

  1. HE HAS A PERMANENT RELATIONSHIP WITH US.
    1. How do you define Everlasting: – perpetual, eternal, forever, without end.
      1. Ps. 90:2 BEFORE THE MOUNTAINS WERE BORN OR YOU BROUGHT FORTH THE EARTH AND THE WORLD, FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING YOU ARE GOD.
      2. The great thing about Jesus, our Messiah, our Everlasting Father, is that He never outgrows us or loses interest in us. He never drifts apart or loses touch with us . He’s always there. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!
      3. What kind of relationship does this Everlasting Father have with us? Scripture gives us three aspects of this permanent relationship He has with us.
    2. His love toward us is everlasting.
      1. ISA. 54:8 BUT WITH EVERLASTING KINDNESS I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON YOU,” SAYS THE LORD YOUR REDEEMER. I HAVE LOVED YOU WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE.
    3. His covenant with us is everlasting.
      1. Ez. 37:26-27 I WILL MAKE A COVENANT OF PEACE WITH THEM; IT WILL BE AN EVERLASTING COVENANT. I WILL ESTABLISH THEM AND INCREASE THEIR NUMBERS, AND I WILL PUT MY SANCTUARY AMONG THEM FOREVER. 27MY DWELLING PLACE WILL BE WITH THEM; I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY WILL BE MY PEOPLE.
      2. Ps. 37 You’re in my Hands
    4. His Salvation for us is everlasting.
      1. ISA. 45:17 BUT ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED BY THE LORD WITH AN EVERLASTING SALVATION; YOU WILL NEVER BE PUT TO SHAME OR DISGRACED, TO AGES EVERLASTING.
      2. ISA. 60:20 YOUR SUN WILL NEVER SET AGAIN, AND YOUR MOON WILL WANE NO MORE; THE LORD WILL BE YOUR EVERLASTING LIGHT, AND YOUR DAYS OF SORROW WILL END.
      3. JN. 6:47 I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, HE WHO BELIEVES HAS EVERLASTING LIFE.
  2. HE HAS A PATERNAL RELATIONSHIP WITH US.
    1. Isaiah says this child to be born would be called “Everlasting Father”. Why does Isaiah refer to the Messiah as a Father? This sounds confusing to call Jesus Christ, “Father”. Up to this point, only God was referred to as Father.
      1. PS. 89:26 YOU ARE MY FATHER, MY GOD, THE ROCK MY SAVIOR.
      2. ISA. 63:16 YOU, O LORD, ARE OUR FATHER, OUR REDEEMER FROM OF OLD IS YOUR NAME.
      3. And yet, Jesus Himself claims to be like the Father to us.
        1. JN. 10:30 I AND THE FATHER ARE ONE.”
        2. JN. 14:9 ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN ME HAS SEEN THE FATHER.
        3. Jesus Christ is like a Father to us. He does things that a Father would do. What does a Father do? Better yet, what does our Everlasting Father do for us? Let me give your four things:
    2. Our Father Gives us Life
      1. Gen. 2:7 THE LORD GOD FORMED THE MAN FROM THE DUST OF THE GROUND AND BREATHED INTO HIS NOSTRILS THE BREATH OF LIFE, AND THE MAN BECAME A LIVING BEING.
      2. Jn. 1:3 THROUGH JESUS ALL THINGS WERE MADE; WITHOUT HIM NOTHING WAS MADE THAT HAS BEEN MADE.
      3. •Jesus gave us not only physical life but more importantly, spiritual life.
      4. Jn. 5:24 I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, WHOEVER HEARS MY WORD AND BELIEVES HIM WHO SENT ME HAS ETERNAL LIFE AND WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED; HE HAS CROSSED OVER FROM DEATH TO LIFE
      5. John 10:10 The Thief Comes, but I come that you might have life and have it more abundantly
    3. Our Father Gives us Advice
      1. 2 weeks ago we saw how he’s a wonderful counselor
        1. One who understands our struggle / Cares for Us/ Committed to us
        2. Lk. 21:15 FOR I WILL GIVE YOU WORDS AND WISDOM THAT NONE OF YOUR ADVERSARIES WILL BE ABLE TO RESIST OR CONTRADICT.
    4. Our Father Loves Us
      1. JN. 15:9 AS THE FATHER HAS LOVED ME, SO HAVE I LOVED YOU. NOW REMAIN IN MY LOVE.
    5. Our Father Protects Us
      1. Again, we saw this last week in Jesus, our Mighty God: He knows where we are / He knows what shape were in / He knows how much time we have / He knows the efforts we’ve made to save ourselves/he knows we need Him
      2. Jn. 17:11-12 (Jesus praying) HOLY FATHER, PROTECT THEM BY THE POWER OF YOUR NAME—THE NAME YOU GAVE ME—SO THAT THEY MAY BE ONE AS WE ARE ONE. 12WHILE I WAS WITH THEM, I PROTECTED THEM AND KEPT THEM SAFE BY THAT NAME YOU GAVE ME.
      3. Jn. 10:27-28 MY SHEEP LISTEN TO MY VOICE; I KNOW THEM, AND THEY FOLLOW ME. 28 I GIVE THEM ETERNAL LIFE, AND THEY SHALL NEVER PERISH; NO ONE CAN SNATCH THEM OUT OF MY HAND.
        1. THE HEBREW WORD FOR ALMIGHTY GOD IS EL GIBBOR FOR JESUS IS THE ONE TO WHOM ALL POWER IS GIVEN. IT MEANS HERO AND IT REFERS TO ONE WHO IS STRONG, MIGHTY AND INVINCIBLE AND YOU DO KNOW THAT JESUS ALONE IS WORTHY TO BE OUR HERO FOR HE HAS DEFEATED ALL OF OUR ENEMIES
        2. 1 Corinthians 15:55 (KJV) O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory. Not only has he defeated death but also sin
        3. Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law but under grace. Not only death and sin but also Satan
          • AND SINCE HE DEFEATED DEATH, SIN, AND THE DEVIL WE MUST REALIZE THAT WE ARE NOT FIGHTING TO VICTORY BUT WE ARE FIGHTING FROM VICTORY BECAUSE THERE IS VICTORY IN JESUS CHRIST AND HE IS A MIGHTY GOD
          • HE`S MIGHTY BECAUSE HE IS OMNIPOTENT (ALL–POWERFUL)
          • OMNISCIENT (ALL-KNOWING)
          • OMNIPRESENT (HE`S EVERYWHERE)
          • HE IS ABLE TO SAVE ANYONE WHO CRIES OUT TO HIM FOR SALVATION
          • JESUS AS THE MIGHTY GOD HAS THE POWER AND KNOWLEDGE TO RESCUE PEOPLE FROM ALL TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
          • HE HAS THE POWER TO DELIVER FROM ANY BONDAGE OR OPPRESSION WHETHER DUE TO SOME ENEMY OR PERSONAL ADDICTION AND
          • WHAT A MIGHTY GOD HE IS
  3. WE CAN HAVE A POWERFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.
    1. Jesus came to earth to be our Messiah, our Everlasting Father. He’s not only Everlasting, He’s also a true Father to us.
    2. Matthew 1:23 “THE VIRGIN WILL BE WITH CHILD AND WILL GIVE BIRTH TO A SON, AND THEY WILL CALL HIM IMMANUEL –WHICH MEANS, ’GOD WITH US.’”
    3. Kingdom Relationship

John 3:16

Romans 10:9-10,13

The Bottom Line: Jesus Christ is our Everlasting Father.

As our Wonderful Counselor, we can seek Him. As our Mighty God, we can rest in Him.

As our Everlasting Father, we can run to Him. Would you run to Him today?
