The Church We See – Jesus: Our Foundation

P. Jason Hubbard

Jesus: Our
He is the one that we build our lives and our church on and the Salvation that we anchor our souls in. His words bring life and enable us to mature as we follow Him.

Philippians 3:8 ESV – Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

1 Corinthians 3:9-15 ESV – For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

THE JESUS OF THE BIBLE

We believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the savior of men, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, fully God and fully man (Luke 1:26-25; John 1:18; Isaiah 7:14, 9:16).

1. Jesus is .

A. He existed in the .

John 8:57-58 ESV – So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

We believe in the eternal Godhead; one God existing in three persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14).

John 1:1 ESV – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Proverbs 8:27-31 ESV – When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.

B. He is resurrected and lives .

We believe in the bodily ascension of Jesus to heaven, His exaltation, and person, literal and bodily coming again the second time for the Church (John 14:2-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

2. Jesus is fully and fully .

If he were only God he wouldn’t be able to for us.

1 Timothy 2:5 ESV – For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

Romans 5:19 ESV – For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

If he were only man he wouldn’t be able to us.

Psalm 49:7 ESV – Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life,

3. Jesus is the to be saved.

We believe Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day, and personally appeared to His disciples (1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Romans 4:25).

John 14:6 ESV – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Acts 4:12 ESV – And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

“The son of God became the son of man so that the sons of man can become the sons of God.” — C.S. Lewis

4. Jesus is .

1 Peter 3:15 NASB20 – but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect;

In saying that Jesus is Lord, we are giving Him the authority over our life, we commit ourselves to obey Him in everything because He knows best, we draw a line in the sand and establish our loyalty to Him, and we refuse anything that denies the Godhead and rule of Christ.

“Christ is either Lord of all, or is not Lord at all.” — Hudson Taylor

Matthew 7:21 ESV – “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

WE BUILD ON THE FOUNDATION OF JESUS BY AND HIS WORDS.

Luke 6:47-48 ESV – Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

How do we hear Jesus?

The .

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Proven of Godly wisdom.

Exodus 18:21-22 ESV – Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.

.

1 Corinthians 14:4 ESV – The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

A still, small .

1 Kings 19:11-13 ESV – And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

What is Jesus speaking to you through Scripture, counsel, prophecy or a still, small voice and how are you going to obey?
