The Book of Romans Part 11 – The Remnant

P. Jason Hubbard

Romans 11:1-5 CSB – I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.

1. The fulfillment of natural promises to Israel our belief in the fulfillment of spiritual promises made to us.

Romans 11:1-5 CSB – Or don’t you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah – how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!” But what was God’s answer to him? “I have left seven thousand for myself who have not bowed down to Baal.” In the same way, then, there is also at the present time a remnant chosen by grace.

Romans 2:28-29 CSB – For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart – by the Spirit, not the letter. That person’s praise is not from people but from God.

Romans 9:6 CSB – Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

2. The remnant of Israel are those who their faith in the Messiah.

Romans 11:17-24 CSB – Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, though a wild olive branch, were grafted in among them and have come to share in the rich root of the cultivated olive tree, do not boast that you are better than those branches. But if you do boast – you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you. Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” True enough; they were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but beware, because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness toward you – if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from your native wild olive tree and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these – the natural branches – be grafted into their own olive tree?

3. The tree represents the & of God.

Leviticus 26:40-42 CSB – “But when they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their ancestors – their unfaithfulness that they practiced against me, and how they acted with hostility toward me, “and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them into the land of their enemies – and when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, “then I will remember my covenant with Jacob. I will also remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

Ephesians 3:11 CSB – This is according to his eternal purpose accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

4. The gentile remnant will be into the purposes & promises of God with the Jewish remnant that remains by faith.

5. The remnant take hold of the purposes & promises of God by .

He has promised eternal life. (John 10:27-28)
He has promised that his grace is sufficient for us. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
He has promised that his children will not be overtaken with temptation. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
He has promised victory over death. (Acts 2:32; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4; 15:57)
He has promised to supply every need. (Philippians 4:19)
He has promised that all things work together for the good of those who love him. (Romans 8:28)

1. Continue to .

Romans 11:20-21, 23 CSB – True enough; they were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but beware, because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. … And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again.

2. Remain .

Romans 11:18 CSB – do not boast that you are better than those branches. But if you do boast – you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you.

Romans 11:25 CSB – I don’t want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited: A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

3. Continue to live in and live out God’s .

Romans 11:22 CSB – Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness toward you – if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

Romans 2:4 CSB – Or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

kindness is proof that we have kindness.

1 John 4:10-12 CSB – Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is made complete in us.
