The Book of Romans Part 9

P. Jason Hubbard

Romans 9:1-5 CSB – I speak the truth in Christ – I am not lying; my conscience testifies to me through the Holy Spirit – that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the benefit of my brothers and sisters, my own flesh and blood. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple service, and the promises. The ancestors are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen.

Romans 9:6-8 CSB – Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Neither is it the case that all of Abraham’s children are his descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac. That is, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but the children of the promise are considered to be the offspring.

Romans 2:28-29 CSB – For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart – by the Spirit, not the letter. That person’s praise is not from people but from God.

Romans 4:16 CSB – This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants – not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.

Salvation is dependent on faith in the and not on what is natural.

1. It’s easy to gravitate back to reliance on what we can and what we can .

2. Israel’s well laid out structure didn’t accomplish what needed to be done in the .

Romans 9:4 CSB – They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple service, and the promises.

Isaiah 29:13 CSB – The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honor me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.

Malachi 1:13 CSB – “You also say, ‘Look, what a nuisance!’ And you scorn it,” says the Lord of Armies. “You bring stolen, lame, or sick animals. You bring this as an offering! Am I to accept that from your hands?” asks the Lord.

3. Religious ritual is not a for the living sacrifice of the heart.

Romans 12:1 CSB – Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.

Acts 13:22 CSB – “After removing him, he raised up David as their king and testified about him, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart, who will carry out all my will.’”

1 Samuel 16:7 CSB – But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”

Jeremiah 17:9 CSB – The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable – who can understand it?

When our heart wanders, God is faithful to call us back and give us another chance to repent and turn to him.

God gives us a heart.

Ezekiel 36:26 CSB – “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”

1. .

Jeremiah 29:13 CSB – “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.”

2. .

Acts 3:19 CSB – “Therefore repent and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out,”

3. .

Isaiah 40:31 ESV – but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
