The Book of Romans Part 7 – Grace to Grow

P. Jason Hubbard

1. The Law is .

2. The Law and .

Galatians 3:10 CSB – For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed.

Romans 7:7-8 CSB – What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet. And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead.

Romans 7:11 CSB – For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

3. The Law is .

John 3:17-18 CSB – “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.”

2 Peter 3:9 CSB – The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.

4. Mercy is God what we deserve.

Romans 6:23 CSB – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

5. Grace is God us what we don’t deserve.

Romans 2:4 CSB – Or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

6. Mercy isn’t permission to sin but applies grace to .

Romans 7:4-6 CSB – Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ so that you may belong to another. You belong to him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions aroused through the law were working in us to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, since we have died to what held us, so that we may serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the old letter of the law.

2 Corinthians 3:18 CSB – We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory…

Romans 7:18-24 CSB – For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one that does it, but it is the sin that lives in me. So I discover this law: When I want to do what is good, evil is present with me. For in my inner self I delight in God’s law, but I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

Romans 8:1-2 CSB – Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

7. The empowers grace to grow.

Ezekiel 36:25-27 CSB – “I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.

8. Living by the Spirit is a .

2 Corinthians 3:18 CSB – We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Exodus 23:30 CSB – “I will drive them out little by little ahead of you until you have become numerous and take possession of the land.

Deuteronomy 7:22 CSB – “The Lord your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you.”
