The Book of Romans Part 6 – The War Within

P. Jason Hubbard

He wants us to see that it’s impossible to live godly lives without constantly receiving , help from God.

Romans 5:6-8 ESV – For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—  but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1. Our proof that our hope for eternal life won’t be disappointed is the boundless God showed when He sent His Son to save us.

Romans 5:9-11 ESV – Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, how much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

2. If God loved us so much that when we were His enemies He was willing to sacrifice His Son, how much more will He do for us now that we have become His ?

Romans 8:24 ESV – Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Romans 5:12 ESV – Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all men, because all sinned.

3. All are in sin and sentenced to death through Adam.

4. Sin Defined

A. (The Greek: hamartia): the inward disposition of rebellion against God arising out of the exaltation of the self.

B. (The Greek: parabasis): a willful violation of a known law.

C. Misstep (The Greek: paraptoma): a false step, a deviation from truth.

Romans 5:12-18 ESV – But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man’s trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift overflowed to the many by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ. And the gift is not like the one man’s sin, because from one sin came the judgment, resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification.  Since by the one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is life-giving justification for everyone.

5. The of righteousness for those who believe.

Romans 5:20-21 ESV – Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

6. What the does

1. How God us

A. The body.

B. The

C. The human

2. Life Christ

A. : I am now found innocent in God’s court. I am forgiven for my past deeds and continue to be forgiven for my present ones.

B. : I repent of my rebellion, and my spirit submits to God.

C. : Until the resurrection, my body, which includes my old, subconscious mind, remains rebellious and therefore must be continually subdued and renewed.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Galatians 5:16-18, 24 ESV – But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law…. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
