HOLY SPIRIT | PART 2 – GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

P. Rhett Barden

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

The Holy Spirit is the of the Holy Trinity.

WHAT’S HIS ROLE?

He is my , , , and .2 Corinthians 13:14 (Message) “The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God,  the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.”

DON’T GRIEVE GOD

Ephesians 4:30 (Message) Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

WHEN YOU HEARD AND BELIEVED YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.1 Corinthians 12:3 (NIV) …no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

BUT THERE’S MORE…

Acts 1:3–5 (NIV) After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

THE DAY OF PENTECOST

Acts 2:1–18, 21(NIV) When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?  8Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; Visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy… And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

NOW WHAT?

Acts 2:38-39 (NIV) Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off–for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

ALL GOD’S GIFTS ARE GOOD

James 1:17 (NIV) Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.1 Corinthians 12:1 (NIV) Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.1 Corinthians 12:4 (NIV) There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.1 Corinthians 12:11 (NIV) All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

LET’S TALK ABOUT TONGUES…

1 Corinthians 14:5 (NIV) I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.1 Corinthians 14:4 (NIV) Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves…1 Corinthians 14:13–15 (NLT) So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said. For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.  Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand.Mark 16:17–18 (NKJV) And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

THE PROOF IS IN THE FRUIT

Galatians 5:22–23 (NLT) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.1 Corinthians 13:1–13 (NIV) If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part,  but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS US TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Philippians 2:13 (NLT) For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

HOW DO I RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND RECEIVE HIS GOOD GIFTS?

1. God to you and the baptism of the Holy Spirit and His by .2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV) …where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.*The 9 gifts of the spirit grouped in three sections is not meant to be an exhaustive list.  It’s just the beginning.
