HOLY SPIRIT | PART 1 – BAPTISM

Acts 19:1-2 (NIV) While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”The Holy Spirit is not  or .The Holy Spirit is not an or .  

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

The Holy Spirit is the  of the Holy Trinity

WHAT’S HIS ROLE?

1. He is my

John 16:8 (NIV) “When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.”

John 14:26 (NIV) But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:13 (NIV) “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.2 Corinthians 13:14 (Message) “The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God,  the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.”Ephesians 4:30 (Message) Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

3 BAPTISMS ON OUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

Galatians 3:26-27 (NIV) You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV) For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body.

Matthew 28:19–20 (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE…

– RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 20:19–22 (NIV) On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.1 Corinthians 12:3 (NIV) …no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

Luke 24:36 (NIV) While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” Luke 24:49 (NIV) I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”Acts 1:3–5 (NIV) After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”Ephesians 5:18 (NIV) Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22–23 (NLT) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

HOW DO I RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” 

Acts 2:38-39 (NIV) Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off–for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
