IT IS WRITTEN – PART 4 | “Holding On to God’s Word”

P. Rhett Barden

John 8:31-32 (NIV) Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Holding On to God’s Word

1. Make it the foundation of my life.

Matthew 7:24 (NIV) “Everyone who hears these words of mine, and puts them into practice, is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Popular culture.

Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?Proverbs 16:25 (NIV) There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.Romans 12:2 (The Message) Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

What do I do when I don’t understand?What do I do when I don’t like it?

2. Make it the first part of my daily life.

Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

First 15

5 minutes in Worship.

Psalm 34:1 (NIV) I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.

5 minutes in Prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

5 minutes in the Word.

Psalm 119:105 (NIV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

3. Allow it to grow deeper in my life.

Colossians 3:16 (NIV) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (The Message) Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head.

4. Make it a weapon for the challenges of life.

Ephesians 6:13, 17 (NIV) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground… Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17 (MSG) God’s Word is an indispensable weapon.

Matthew 4:3-4 (NIV) The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written…”

Memorize Scripture Psalm 119:9-11 (NIV) How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
