SERMON: Family Feuds
TEXT: Ephesians 2:11-22
We live in a world riddled with prejudice of all sorts. As we will see this weekend, there was also some serious “othering” going on in the early church. We’ve seen that the world’s best attempts at a cure for prejudice (laws, representation, tolerance). But, they always seem to fall short. In Ephesians we see the antidote for prejudice does exist but is extremely costly.
SERMON NOTES
We were Born into an “Othering” World
It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. ~ Ephesians 2:1-2a(MSG)
Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:16 (MSG) (See also 1 Corinthians 1:10, 11:18 & 12:13)
Our Way out of “Othering”
But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us…He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups.~ Ephesians 2:14 & 15b (NLT) (See also Gal 3:28)
We Have Been Re-born to Build Bridges
God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.
~ 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (MSG) (See also Matthew 22:36-40)
