TODAY’S SERMON
SERMON SERIES: Meals with Jesus
TITLE: Labels at the Table
TEXT: Luke 5:27-32
SPEAKER: Pastor Dan
We are told in Luke that “The Son of Man came eating and drinking.” Jesus’ ministry strategy seems to have been long meals with all sorts of people. As we move towards Easter, we will follow Jesus from table to table and be challenged with his teachings, moved by his grace and inspired to share our own table. This weekend at the table, Jesus challenges how we use labels to keep our distance from undesirable people and even from God.
SERMON NOTES
Stop Fixating on the Labels
And I, the Son of Man, feast and drink, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of the worst sort of sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by what results from it.” Matthew 11:19
Look in the Mirror
We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:22-23
Choosing Mercy Over Rightness
I want you to be merciful; I don’t want your sacrifices. I want you to know God; that’s more important than burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6
Choose Your Label Carefully
For I have come to call sinners, not those who think they are already good enough.” Matthew 9:13b
This is a true saying, and everyone should believe it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — and I was the worst of them all. I Timothy 1:15
