December 22, 2024

Have you ever felt like you might miss out on something good?

FOMO: Fear of Missing Out

FOMO: The Fear of Missing Out is a prevalent psychological phenomenon characterized by the apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent.

How has it affected our society?

Advertising and Marketing is geared to make you feel like you are missing out.

• In 2024, U.S. advertisers are projected to spend approximately $8.14 billion on influencer marketing, marking a 16% year-over-year increase

• $9.29 billion by 2025

•$10.67 billion by 2026

• In 2023, Instagram was expected to attract the highest spending in the United States, with expenditures projected at $1.95 billion. YouTube and TikTok followed, with anticipated spends of $986 million and $774.8 million, respectively.

“When you wait on God, you won’t miss what’s meant for you. His plans for your life will unfold perfectly, right on time.” -Louie Giglio

When we trust God’s , FOMO fades.

God knew we Jesus!

Luke 2:10-11 (TLB)…the angel reassured them.
“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born tonight in Bethlehem!

What Would Jesus Say about FOMO?

Matthew 6:33 (NCV)Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.

FOMO on the belief that life is incomplete without certain experiences or possessions.

John 6:35 (NLT)Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

FOMO often from a craving for satisfaction through worldly experiences.

Matthew 6:34 (NLT)“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

FOMO often people to worry about the future or regret past decisions.

Luke 12:15 (NLT)Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

FOMO often to comparisons with others, but Jesus shifts the focus to finding contentment in God, not in earthly metrics.

Matthew 5:13-16 (NLT)13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. 14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

FOMO often ties to comparisons with others, but Jesus shifts the focus to finding contentment in God, not in earthly metrics.

How Does Jesus Answer the Lies I Believe?

Lie: “I’ll miss out if I don’t keep up.”
Jesus’ Truth: “You are complete in me.” (Colossians 2:10)

Lie: “Everyone else is living a better life.”
Jesus’ Truth: “Follow me, and you will find life.” (John 10:10)

Lie: “I need to do more, see more, or have more to be happy.”
Jesus’ Truth: “Come to me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

How do I live differently?

in His Presence
