THE AGE OF SPECTACLES

WHAT IS A SPECTACLE?

1- A spectacle is a moment of time, of varying length, in which a collective gaze is fixed on some specific image, or video, or event.

2- A spectacle is something that captures human attention, an instant when our eyes and brains focus and fixate on something projected at us.

Hebrews 2:1 (ESV)…we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Every spectacle something from us.

AIM: To something in us in order to something from us.

THE GREATEST SPECTACLE

HOW DO YOU SEE THE CROSS?

The cross is not merely a physical spectacle for the eye. No, its greater glory is in serving as a spectacle for the ear of faith.

Colossians 2:15 (NIV)And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Galatians 3:1 (NIV)You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

“At root, sinners feed on to escape God.”

Romans 8:6 (NLT)So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

OPEN OUR EYES

Romans 12:1 (J.B. Phillips New Testament) With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to him and acceptable by him.

FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS

Hebrews 12:1-3(NIV)Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

WHAT ARE YOU FIXATED ON?

Matthew 6:22-23“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if by our eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

“The presence and the manifestation of the presence are not the same. There can be one without the other. God is here when we are wholly unaware of it. He is manifest only when and as we are aware of His presence.”-A.W. Tozer

Awareness is our greatest need today. Michael Freeland Miller, His House, His Presence

Romans 12:2 (J.B. Phillips New Testament) Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.

The “renewed” mind considers matters from the perspective of the coming era.Craig S. Keener

The proper use of the mind: those who discern what is good, acceptable (v. 1) and perfect will know God’s will, which also (in 12:3) provides self-understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6(NIV)Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
