Not About Me | Philippians 2:1-11

Philippians 2: 1–4 “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

The issue was selfishness…
and the cause was pride.

Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value othersabove yourselves,”

Andrew Murray “The humble person is not one who thinks meanly about himself; he simply does not think of himself at all.”

Romans 12:3 “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us” (NLT).

Philippians 2:3–4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value othersabove yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Warren Wiersbe “This doesn’t mean that the believer is at the beck and call of everybody else or that he is a “religious doormat” for everybody to use! Some people try to purchase friends and maintain church unity by “giving in” to everybody else’s whims and wishes.”

2 Corinthians 4:5 (GNT) “Our message is not about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are your servants for his sake”.

Four Examples of How to Live with Humility:

1. Think of others before yourself.

Philippians 2:5–6 “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;”

Warren Wiersbe “Our outlook determines our outcome and attitude determines action.”

JOY: Jesus, Others, You

2. Be a servant.

Philippians 2:7 “rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

3. Be willing to make sacrifices.

Philippians 2:8 “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

Dr. John Henry Jowett said, “Ministry that costs nothing, accomplishes nothing.”
“Does it cost me to be a Christian?”

4. Give God the glory.

Philippians 2:9-11“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

2 Corinthians 6:2b “…I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
