Who is More Important? | 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

1 Corinthians 12:12 “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.”

Key Point: Every disciple is needed in the church!

3 Truths showing how the Church is more effective when every disciple does their part.

1. We need one another if the church is to function effectively.

1 Corinthians 12:13-15 “For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.”  Paul referencing “Jews, or Greeks, slave or free” shows how different the members of the Corinthian church were. He emphasizes that though the people in the church were unique and diverse, all of its parts come together to form one body. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.”

1 Corinthians 12:18 “But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”

1. The church is a demonstration of God’s plan.
2. Every believer has been given a gift by God.
3. God is sovereign.

Psalm 115:3 “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.”
Psalm 135:6 “The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.”

1 Corinthians 12:19-20 “If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.”

2. We will be more unified when we depend on one another.

1 Corinthians 12:21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”

3. When we are unified, we are better equipped to accomplish our mission.

1 Corinthians 12:27 “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

Question: Who is more important in the church?
Answer: All of us.

1 Peter 4:10-11 “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”
