Summer Slump – Sermon #5 | Kindness

July 3, 2022 / Monte Wilkinson

Show Kindness | Titus 3:3-8

Galatians 5:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” “Walk by the Spirit”

Galatians 5:22–23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Ephesians 4:31-32 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each another, just as in Christ God forgave you.” How important is kindness?

Bottom Line: Be kind to all kinds of people.

Kindness is Friendly.

Kindness is Generous.

Kindness is Considerate.

Kindness may be simple, but it is not always easy.
God Acted with Kindness

Titus 3:3-8 “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.”

Jesus Reacted with Kindness (Luke 18:35-43)

Luke 18:35-43 “As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. 42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.”
3 Things that Jesus did to Show Kindness

  1. Jesus was willing to be interrupted.

(v40) “Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him.”

  2. Jesus was available to help.

(v41) “What do you want me to do for you?”

  3. Jesus willingly fixed the problem.

(v42-43) “Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43 Immediately he received his sight.”

Kindness requires action.
Kind actions are often accompanied by kind words.

Who are the people we can be kind too?

  1. Be Kind to People you love.
  2. Be Kind to People you know.
  3. Be Kind to People in need of help.
  4. Be Kind to People who disagree with you.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr “Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

5. Be Kind to People anonymously.

Matthew 26:53 “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
