Why Worry? | Matthew 6:25-34

Matthew 13:7 “Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.”

Matthew 13:22 “The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.”

Dallas Willard The Divine Conspiracy “The words anxious and worry both have reference to strangling or being choked. Certainly, that is how we feel when we are anxious. Things and events have us by the throat and seem to be cutting off our life.”

Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”

Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
A. Birds don’t sow.
B. Birds don’t reap.
C. Birds don’t store away in barns.

I Timothy 6:8 “But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

Matthew 6:26b “Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Matthew 10:29-31 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

If God takes care of birds, then we can trust that He will provide for us.

Matthew 6:27 “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Jesus reveals the futility of worry.

“How can worrying make you more attractive?”

Genesis 1:27 (GW) “So God created humans in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female.”

Matthew 6:28-29 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

Matthew 6:30 “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”

Faith is trusting that the image of God is where beauty comes from.

Matthew 6:31-33 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Our strategy should be an unwavering rejection of worry.

God is faithful.
So, there is no need to worry.
