A Fish Story | Jonah 2

Jonah 1:17 “Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”

Jonah 2:1-2 “From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.”

1. When in a crisis, pray.

Psalm 18:3 “I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.”

Matthew 28:20b “…I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

“from deep in the realm of the dead” Hebrew – Sheol

2 things that motivate us to pray
A. Pray because your circumstances require it.
B. Pray because your faith needs it.

The result is that your faith grows when you see God work.

2. Show God your gratitude.

Jonah 2:9
“But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

Jonah 2:10 “And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.”

Matthew 12:39-41 “He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.”

Key Point: Jesus’ resurrection proves that our salvation is real, and that death no longer has powerover us!
