Week of September 19, 2021

Love limits liberty. We can be too indifferent or too sensitive to the thinking of our fellow Christians. Concerning areas where the Bible is silent, is liberty our first consideration? We have to balance rights and unity. If we err, what is the governing principle that should overrule our thinking? When in doubt about a course of action, do you view your rights as an American as more important than your responsibilities as a Christian? Are you setting the right example for other people? Believers? Unchurched? Children? Simply because something is a liberty does not mean that liberty is the right course of action. God is not so much concerned with who is right in the gray areas but do you act and speak with loving actions and loving words? So often we want to solve problems with rules. Instead let’s make love the preeminent consideration. Let’s respect one another. We must remember the influence we have. We can build up or we can tear down. What’s on your agenda?

Humble Love Governs

Concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. If anyone supposes he knows anything, he has not yet known; but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 1 Corinthians 8:1-3

Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. Romans 14:1

Correct Knowledge Guides

Therefore, concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know there is no such thing as an idol and there is no God but one. Even if there are so-called idols yet for us there is but one God, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. However, not all men have this knowledge, but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience being weak is defiled. 1 Corinthians 8:4-7

I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Romans 14:14

Blind Spots Hinder

Food will not commend us to God, we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. Take care lest this liberty of yours somehow becomes a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, and brother for those sake Christ died. Thus, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, that I might not cause my brother to stumble. 1 Corinthians 8:8-13

For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are not longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. Romans 14:15, 17, 21
