The health of the local church greatly relies on its leaders.

What are the Four Types of Church Government?

Episcopal

Characterized by: of churches.

Pastoral

Characterized by: One head pastor having authority.

Congregational

Characterized by: The rules.

Eldership

Characterized by: governance by select, biblically qualified individuals.

Eldership is the biblical model of church governance.

Elder is an office of the church. The same office is identified by two terms…

  1. “elder” or presbyteros– speaks of the person’s character, wisdom and maturity (James 5:13-15)

  2. “Overseer/ bishop” or episkopos– speaks of the person’s work and responsibility to watch over the church. (Acts 20:28)

Qualification of Elders:

Deacons (Acts 6:1-6; I Tim. 3:8-13)

Diakonon- Servants who work as an extension of the ministry of the elders and pastors.

Qualifications- same as for elders, except for teaching.
