APOSTLESHIP (I Cor. 12:28)
Function:
Unique desire/ability to: Go where the Gospel isn’t preached. Be adventurous; inventive; take risks. Cross barriers/ assimilate culturally while influencing for Christ. Motivate others to carry out Great Commission. Plant churches/ministries.
Cautions: Be careful not to see yourself as an apostle like the Twelve/Paul.
EVANGELISM (II Cor. 4:7; Isaiah 52:7)
Function: the
Unique desire/ability to: Clearly communicate the Gospel. Go out of your way to share Christ. Overcome fear. Engage non-believers in conversation. Seek relationships w/the lost.
Cautions: Don’t be pushy. Don’t take pride in number of converts. Don’t forsake discipleship.
SHEPHERDING (Eph. 4:11)
Function: Caring for of others.
Unique desire/ability to: Focus on people’s spiritual needs. Oversee and invest in those entrusted to you. Draw the spiritually needy. Have more concern for others than self.
Cautions: Don’t try to do it all yourself. Hold others accountable. Don’t be controlling. Learn to say no. Watch out for pride. Protect family time.
PROPHECY (Rom. 12:6)
Function: the
Unique desire/ability to: Proclaim the Word boldly. Identify/reveal destructive practices. Make quick decisions; do things right. Comfort by sharing truth. Preach/teach publicly.
Cautions: Don’t needlessly hurt feelings. Speak truth in love. Let the Spirit convict (not you). Work on being positive, patient, tactful.
TEACHING (Eph. 4:11)
Function: in the
Unique desire/ability to: Study/relay truth in organized manner. Offer practical application of doctrine. Make plain what isn’t immediately clear. Identify untruth.
Cautions: Don’t be overly critical of other viewpoints. Don’t measure spirituality by Bible knowledge. Listen as well as talk. Don’t forsake shepherding.
WORD OF KNOWLEDGE (I Cor. 12:8; I Peter 3:15)
Function: Understand and Speak Forth
Unique desire/ability to: Recall Biblical info when needed. Be ready to give a clear answer when called upon.
Cautions: Don’t be arrogant!
WORD OF WISDOM (I Cor. 12:8)
Function: Understand and Speak Concerning the of
Unique desire/ability to: Impart wisdom when needed. Have insight that’s not obvious. Know what to do and how to do it.
Cautions: Don’t rely on your own “wisdom.”
EXHORTATION (Romans 12:8)
Function:
Unique desire/ability to: Develop relationships to encourage spiritual growth. Explain how to apply God’s Word. Listen and assess. Meet w/ others one on one. Rely on wisdom and logic (not emotion)

Cautions: Don’t interrupt. Back it up w/ Scripture. Don’t be prideful in motivational ability. Don’t emphasize programs over people. Don’t get discouraged when results aren’t evident. Don’t abuse persuasiveness.
