HOT POTATOES: The Bible Speaks to Controversial Topics

Message #2: “Divorce and Remarriage”

The difference between man’s mind and God’s mind, regarding divorce:

Man says: , breaking a marital commitment is a matter. (Matt. 5:31; Deut. 24:1)

Two rabbinical schools of thought…

Shammai: A man can divorce his wife for any reason.

Hillel: A man can divorce his wife only for adultery.

God says: , breaking a marital commitment is incredibly matter. (Matt. 5:32; 19:3-6)

Two different views on this text:

View #1- For the divorced woman, remarriage is adultery.

View #2- To divorce woman unjustly stigmatizes her.

Jesus’ view of marriage is the view possible.

Your marriage is to be an earthly of God’s covenant relationship with you.

Two cases that can be made to justify remarriage:

  1. (Matt. 5:32; 19:9)
  2. by an spouse (I Cor. 7:15)

The difference between man’s mind and God’s mind, regarding oaths:

Man says: Just be careful not to yourself and do what propose to do. (Matt. 5:33; Heb. 6:16)

God says: Be connected to and walk in that . (Matt. 5:34-37)

What does this have to do with marriage? A marriage vow’s is in God, not man.

How does the value you assign to marriage to the world?
