Thesis: It’s always a good idea to do what our sovereign God commands us to do. There are two reasons it is a good idea.
- If we don’t, He might send a storm (which He’ll control) (1:4-17)
- He crafted the tempest (vv. 4-5)
- He governed the crew (vv. 6-13)
- He calmed the sea (vv. 14-16)
- He placed the fish (v. 17)
2. If we don’t, we’ll have to repent (which won’t be pleasant) (2:1-10)
-
- What Jonah said (vv. 1-2)
- What Jonah suffered (vv. 3-6)
- What Jonah thought (vv. 7-9)
- What God did (vv. 2, 6, 10)
Application:
- Never mistake a change of behavior for a change of heart.
- Never equate gratitude for deliverance with repentance from sin.
- Always believe a storm is the prelude for a second chance.
