Jeremiah and the New Thing

Jeremiah 31 NIV; Hebrews 8 NIV; John 13 NIV

Sermon Outline:

The tension between old and new…

Matthew 16.14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Parallels between Jeremiah and Jesus:

  1. Jeremiah was prepared for the word of God.
  2. Jeremiah preached the words of God.
  • Top-down reforms of Josiah
  1. Jeremiah was punished by the people of God.
  2. Jeremiah prophesied the plan of God.

Jeremiah 31.31-34

  • Jeremiah 32.40

Hebrews 8.13

Two Re-Orientations to Shift from Old to New

  1. From External to Internal
  2. From Vertical to Horizontal

A new command for a new covenant: John 13.34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

People nothing like Jesus liked Jesus.

How is Jesus the greater Jeremiah?

  • Jeremiah wept but Jesus himself will wipe away every tear from the eyes of those who love him.
  • Jeremiah was wounded on account of his message, but by Jesus’ wounds, you have been healed.
  • Jeremiah poetically took on the sins of the people while Jesus literally took on the sins of the people, and not just in Jerusalem but for all the world and for all time.
  • Jeremiah prophesied the need of a new heart…but in having his own heart pierced, Jesus made us the recipients of that very heart.
