Ephesians 1:1-6
1. God’s Overwhelming
Passages which suggest the sovereignty of God:
“He chose us in him … he predestined us to be adopted” (Eph. 1:4–5).
“For those God foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son … And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” (Rom. 8:29–30).
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (John 6:44).
Then you have passages like these that support free will:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28).
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.… This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:1, 3–4).
“[The Lord] is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9).
2. God’s Eternal
God the Father- before time. Before the foundation of the world.
God the Son- in time. God inserted himself into our timeline. The timeless entered time.
God the Holy Spirit- in eternity. We’ll cover these verses in a couple of weeks, but the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our salvation. The down payment that guarantees our salvation will last for eternity.
3. God’s Incredible
Blameless (justification)
Holy (imputed righteousness)
4. God’s Astonishing
To be adopted into his family. Remember, if justification is the fundamental blessing of salvation, adoption is the highest blessing.
5. God’s Magnificent
According to the good pleasure of his will. Deliberate. “According to the kind intention of his will.”
